“Hall once wrote an essay in which he rightly criticized Robert Lowell's late poetry. Hall said that once Lowell got famous, he seemed to feel that he could just write down details from his own life in bland verse and people would praise it. The poetry seemed written with the attitude--"It happened to me, THE Robert Lowell, so it must be important." So one wonders if Hall has forgotten writing the essay, for he is doing the same thing here. The poems are almost unbelievably bland, line breaks are meaningless, …” This reader’s critique, from Amazon, has always bothered me since I read it. So, even though presented as such, what is not poetry? |

Many prior topics in Philo 101 about this very same topic. It all boils down to personal preference. For instance, I can barely tolerate e e cummings and Sylvia Plath, but I'm sure others adore their writings and see them as almost sacred. It's all in the eye (or stomach) of the beholder. |

Well, how do we know what is poetry in the first place? A sermon may be very poetic; but is just being poetic in certain aspects, the same as being poetry? Just some more questions to ponder. |

Say you to go to an advertised poetry reading. It turns out to be a burping contest. You can scream poetry all you want, most people will leave early.  |
