Two scared little girls
Crying for their mothers
Were put together
To comfort each other.

First day of first grade
With sorrow to share,
A beautiful friendship
Began in that chair.

We rode the same bus
Lived a few miles apart
And for many years
Enjoyed our linked hearts.

A hot summer’s day
On a horse’s bare back
Bottoms bounced, bare feet dangled
And the reins stayed slack.

Only one destination -
Any available shade!
A whole day to wander…
We had it made!

The spanking that evening
Seemed an unfair decision
But the horse had been borrowed
Without the owner’s permission.

For six years of school,
We shared every class.
People thought we were sisters
And we had a blast.

Our fourth grade teacher
Said we turned her hair gray,
Placed our desks far apart
But that lasted one day.

She learned very quickly
Distance didn’t matter
And talk’s less disruptive
If it’s whispered chatter.

Puberty and ambition
Made our lives rather strange.
Our goals were different;
The friends started to change.

One was still a girl
With dreams of more school.
One dated a soldier
And broke every rule.

At only fifteen,
You became a bride.
I couldn’t bridge the gap
Between us - I tried.

You were a mom in Hawaii
When I graduated.
I headed for college
An idea you’d hated.

I’d see your mother
When in our hometown.
Every failed marriage
Deepened her frown.

But you were finally happy
Or at least, so it seemed.
Entirely too soon
Breast cancer ended the dream.

I wondered then
If you’d lived your life fast
Knowing somehow, some way
That it wouldn’t last.

I hadn’t seen you for years
But news of your death
Shocked the tears from my eyes,
Robbed me of breath.

If things had been different
You’d be forty-five.
With every birthday that passes
I wish you - ALIVE!

To see your granddaughter
Play with her best friend
As they make their own memories
That will have no end.

(tears fall down my cheeks) Oh Suthern, this made my heart cry reading this, my heart goes out to all little girls and boys in the world and I pray that they can all be provided with love and caring and may we all treat each other like little brothers and sisters like how the friendship of the little girls used to be! (wipes tears) God Bless You, sweet friend, you are a true angel and it is you who brought a smile to your friends heart, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Suthern, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
Noah Eaton

suthern...love this look at you as a child and the friendship that was so important.  I think she knew somehow..her soul new perhaps, that she needed to hurry life.  Interesting to think about.

I'm so choked up, I can barely write this response. Did you give a copy of this poem to her family? I am sure it would have meant a great deal to them.
I have a friend whom I love dearly. We've been friends for over 20 years and when she had a breast cancer scare, I nearly went crazy with worry.
It must have been dreadful for you when you learned of your friend's passing.

This was a very emotive piece of writing that really moved me.

Warm hugs to you and your angel friend,
Linda

Well written, an understatement! I experienced your childhood as you captured those true feelings of friendship, a love connected to your very souls, [that kind, so few and far between].

And your ability to portray through this great poem the continuation of life and loss...

Very touching.

Very touching.
Some wounds do not ever heal and require the constant compress of emotion to staunch the leakage in the soul.
Thank you for sharing this.

I know this doesn't help but I sure do know how you feel, and it is so bittersweet with the wonderful memories mixed in with the pain of loss. I wish I could write like this to pay homage to my friend too, but I think they know we miss them.  Wonderful write.
