Silken pure pleasure dome white as ice and just as pure she lies . . . unconquered and forbidden The sweet fruit upon my lips mingled with heaven I hear in the distance mystical tune Damsel and dulcimer beneath ancestral cries prophesying war Within this cavern volcanic tomb wailing throughout I stir and shout . . . "Beware!" Stifled symphony revive within me For I cannot breathe nor leave The sight this vision of horror I plea . . . "Strike me blind!" Eyes of blackness utter madness Fire above him and fire within She cries the cure around him thrice Weave a circle neat and nice For hearts own tune became her bread Demon lover he hath fed "Close your eyes, Beware! Beware!" the circle thrice woven 'round The icy white of Paradise (dedicated to Samuel Taylor Coleridge) |

Tis nearly time to dance around the "Beltain", to pass through the needfire toward the cleansing. This milk? Ambrosia. [This message has been edited by wranx (04-27-2003 08:13 PM).] |

amazing - you always impress me the multiple imagery - well written and what a story - a pure beauty - a demon - her struggle to defend herself thwarted by her own desire - & sooo much more your version of this classic is astounding |

Ok I came back to explain this one a bit if you dont mind seems a bit confusing: Kubla Khan was a 13th century emperor in Xanadu, a city in China. I compare the land and war to the damsel and her demon lover. The cave of ice is a cavern created by volcanic eruption where the demon lover meets the damsel. I am observing. The lover captures the damsel just when the cries of war are heard above - on land - below in caves of ice the demon appears - fiery red hair and evil within - the circle thrice is to ward him off - to encapsulate him - failing - he drinks of paradise. The circle weaved then to prevent further destruction. In the original by Coleridge - this was a vision he had and wrote about it - is much more detailed - this is just a glimpse of it - a most amazing write in itself - he referred to the end result as: "For he on honeydew hath fed and drank the milk of Pardise" (Rush does a great tribute to this on their "Farewell to Kings" album) Ok I'm done . . . thank you everyone xxoo [This message has been edited by littlewing (04-27-2003 06:08 AM).] |

Well, you certainly inspired me to research this poem a little and to read Samuel Taylor Coleridge's poem entitled Kubla Khan which was strangely inspired according to the author by the diaries of Samuel Purchas and a bit of Opium prescribed for medical reasons. (Smiles) I too had some vivid visions when I was under morphine for medical purposes, but unfortunately, similar to Coleridge, I have forgotten most of them because I did not write them down before the images were lost by distractions. (I guess this is a lesson still to be learned by even us poets today) Anyway, I think that you did give the above mentioned poem much justice here and I most enjoyed the personal challenge to look a bit deeper into your source. Good job my poet friend. -Bob |
