It started just two weeks ago, A self-determined male, Who worked and worked and beaked his pull And tweaked then turned and nailed the Pull of weed and wayward straw Then needled, sewed and swirled, And turned a bit of want me space Into a home of whirl… I watched him for some few days, I thought I had kept clue, But you know how days fly by, And my, oh my, he flew!… He came and went then came again and Grew a home of warm, and then I saw the day he came And showed her this new home! He almost buried Her within the home, HER home of new, But you know women, don’t you, men? Away so fast, she flew! No activity I saw, no flying to the nest, I wondered “oh my, ‘tis no home, For her, ‘twas not the best,” So I grieved for loss of robin’s home, For no singing near my door, And thought, oh well, we’ll leave it here, Then Passover came o’er. On the first day it began, A robin’s egg so blue, And I clapped and almost sang… Who knew? Oh God…he knew… Well, one egg was all that there by sit, and here I sat and watched, and flit About as if I were the robin’s aunt… In heart, and mind, and soul, a chant… And in the fly of Jaybird’s wing, I watched, Protected, unguarded wing…no mother, father Shoo! Be gone!… Away the Jaybird flew… Who shall watch then, perhaps my eye To see if more shall come, Then lo, behold, this Easter day, a second Egg was sprung… Now here you sit along with me, now here You watch, and stew… The mother, father part of ye will exact The stories, true…and if there might be a third egg, then so, well, And before you know it, spewed, Before you just to read, here, Within these walls of blue… Robin’s egg blue, is where we’ll be, The poets all and gathered, Where life is life, and where we be, And believe me, it so matters! |

Yes...this recent...this Passover...this Easter...this history.... We have a "habitat" as well as we can keep it outside in our backyard, but this is the first time the robins felt "safe" enough to nest right outside our front door. Perhaps the house, is a home? Good enough, then, for robins to feel safe...I hope. You don't KNOW the motherly instincts this is pulling, just in watch, and wait... if you all will approve...more photos/stories, will be coming... ...OK? |

Karilea, what a delightful story. I liked the rhyme of the poem. I felt like I was skipping along reading it. And, I will be watching to see what becomes of the little birds. A little bird built a nest in one of my Mom's hanging baskets on their porch last year. She sort of adopted the little ones when they were hatched and was a little worried about them when they flew away. Hugs, Ethel |

Awwwww Karilea, how sweet. To have the birds that close to your door is one thing, but for them to have their babes there as well!! I thought we had them close in our back deck's rafters! Please let us know how things proceed with the wee ones. This was lovely. thankyou for this. Chris "Hope" is the thing with feathers- |

My children would love to have seen this. When we were coloring Easter eggs Saturday night, my four year old kept insisting that her eggs were hatching and she would have baby birds with which to play. Very beautiful as always, -Patricia |
