American River In drought years, you can wade across her shallow parts; beneath the dam of the south fork, between bends and curves - folks ride her. This year, winter was late and summer early, the snowpack melts rapidly; in controlled bursts, they let her flow free - to the delta, bays beyond and ultimately, the Pacific. It’s an icy, dangerous dip, still, folks can’t resist her, especially after several beers in ninety degree heat. They watch her sparkle – she’s all whitecaps and hues of blue. She’s not to be underestimated, proven time and again as the number climbs – six so far, nine if you count the car that plunged off the bridge. She played with them a while before swallowing. © 2003 Core |

Oh, Corinne, I heard about that last one yesterday. So sad. It sure doesn't pay to underestimate the force of mother nature, as you've written here so well. [This message has been edited by Midnitesun (06-08-2003 12:17 PM).] |

It seems that every year too many foolishly put-in when they'd be better served watching the river flow. Sad |
