in the shadows

This morning,
while dressing
I reached for my socks,
the news kid said Martha
had lied about stocks;
now she's been indicted
and she's looking quite pale,
is this still a good thing
if she goes to jail?

Oh Martha,
poor Martha,
what's happened to you
you were my hero
what am I to do?
You taught me I could build
almost anything,
with wood,
and a hammer,
and bits of old string.

Dear Martha,
my Martha,
how did you fail?
ImClone's a dog stock
and you're looking for bail;
it's hard times for sure
you looked stylish but frail.
Can you sell off a mansion?
should we throw a bake sale?

Poor Martha,
sweet Martha,
I watched even though
my projects looked lousy,
my paint wouldn't flow,
and I knew you were bi-polar,
abusing your staff,
but we built a fine bird house
and sure had some laughs.

I'll miss you
dear Martha,
sweet Martha the Fair,
I'll miss your blue eyes
and your soft Prozac stare,
mostly I'll miss
the grand projects we'd share,
like tree ornaments
made from baggies,
clothes lint,
and snips of my  hair.

So I've read the charges,
and looked up the counts,
if you've been a bad girl
I'm afraid it amounts
to somewhere between ten
and thirty years time,
if you're found guilty
in court
of creative crime.

Please Martha,
old Martha,
you once held me enthralled,
so let me assure you
though your career's stalled,
the charges against you
don't look very tall
and Danbury Prison's
quite quaint
in the Fall.

icebox....terrible what happens to our heros, huh...as a florist I've always made fun of her, and how the florist in her first buys land, plants the seeds, waits while they mature to flowers, then harvests them,  arranges them (just so mind you in something hand made) and then lets them dry so she can gather seeds for the next planting. Just thinking about it give me a headache....Oh, sorry to ramble on..I enjoyed your poem!

This was very well done but oh, so sad-- on so many "accounts".

Yes, creative...I think she'll get off like OJ...cause she didn't do it...er, because she's going to hire some really good lawyers...money buys talking heads...James

Mr. Icebox,

I had no idea what to expect when I chose this poem to read...I saw your name and thought, well, the kids are outside playing I have a few minutes to absorb, right?

Well, I think this should be read on the evening news (can you imagine how badly Rather could screw up your masterpiece?) LOL
But seriously, this needs to be heard! Maybe Lettermen can read it in his monologue.  Sorry, I don't mean to gush.  But I loved this, man, did I love this!

LOL! This is tongue-in-cheek at its best!

Martha has always had a thing about dough! Is she guiltier than sin? Yep. Will anything happen to her? Nope. Justice at its finest...

Brilliant write, icebox!

Well I'll be~
You couldn't have said it any better!
Icebox~ You really did it this time!

A bake sale, of all things!
Boy, you made me laugh,
and I was giddy to begin with!

Susan Caldwell ~ I am glad I could make you laugh.  Thank you for reading.

the_loner_23 ~ Thanks!

QjQ ~ Well, she does not seem to smile much right now.  Thank you for reading.

Martie ~ It was the joy of make believe though wasn't it?  Pretending the world was a tiny as she made it out to be.  Thank you for your comments.

Earth Angel ~ ooooo..."accounts" now that was good! :0
Thank you for reading my poem

nakedthoughts ~ *grin* I am glad you liked "creative crime."  Thanks for reading.

JamesMichael ~ OH NO!  You mean OJ really DID do it??????  Oh god, is no reality stable?

Cpat Hair ~ Yes, it is a crime, but I have not seen the government go after the Enron or ViaCom creeps or any of the other crooks who looted the lives of thousands of hard working honest people.  Those prosecutors dance around them like they are made of porcelain.

I am no fan of Martha's (bet you hadn't figured that out yet) but she is chump change compared to those people.

I heard someone ask once what was a "petty crime."  The answer given was "That is a crime someone actually went to jail for."

Patricia ~ Well, my stuff is not ALWAYS heavy, maudlin and tedious. *smile*

Dan Rather?  That would be hysterical; he always sounds to me like he has marbles in his mouth.  Letterman, yes, I could see him reading this as if it was serious.  He is fairly good at tongue in cheek.

Alas, I do not think either of them frequent these pages. *laugh*

Thank you for your time and for your comments.

Balladeer ~ You are right, she may be guilty as sin, but sh is not more guilty than many others who have walked away smiling.  Thank you for reading and for commenting.

BluesSerenade ~ Hi!  Hi!  Hi!  I am giddy that you are back here and you were only gone a few days.  I hope you had a great trip.  Thank you for reading my poem.  I am glad you enjoyed it.

edder ~ No, of course not!  You may share it with whom ever you would like.  Thank you for reading it.

passing shadows ~ I am glad you enjoyed it.  Laughter heals.
