The Smell of Age Swamp mud stinks. No other way to say it - swamp mud stinks. Kind of like pickled eggs and beer a couple days after injestion. Kind of like life when your wife says the bed's more comfortable without you in it... Sort of like being bald, getting older... forgetting to remember important things, or just, forgetting. Crack open an old egg, the yoke flattens, having lost its youthful bluge. Youthless stomachs? Same principle, but they go from flat to bulging, gravities joke on the aged, youth being drawn to the ground, leading the way to the grave. Swap mud stinks, no doubt about it, especially when it's had too little moisture, and the bottom's exposed, dries, wrinkles, cracks and peels - old skin's the same, too many years, too little elasticity with age, dries, wrinkles, cracks and peels. Old age stinks. Don't believe what the growing older try to tell you, old age stinks. Like swamp mud, it's a morass of unpleasant smells and feels, the joints, the eyes, the breathing, the aches and pains, too little stamina, no longer the strenght and power of youth. Swamp mud stinks - of years passing, youth aging, dying, decomposing - and the odor never leaves me, these days. w. james beard, jr. © june 2003 |

Jimmy, it does, doesn't it? I think we are both experts on the feel of this. Written well. Ya made the point, for sure! |

quote: this really hits where it hurts...and i like its curt sarcasm hugs, jwesley...interesting perspective that you have shown us here (tying old age to swamp mud--who would have thought of that?) but surely, it can't be all bad though...in fact, i'm thinking a good complement to this one is another "The Smell of Age" (good title btw) poem, extolling the virtues of old age [This message has been edited by kaile (06-03-2003 10:33 PM).] |

jwesley - a lot said about the smell of age. I like to look at it as becoming more mature... BC |

Thanks all for the much appreciated read and comments, and Bill, yep, guess you could look at it that way, but I don't ever intend to grow up and reach "maturity".... jwesley |

jwesley, I like what you just said in your last response. There are things we begin to miss as we grow older, but I think we're gaining new things at the same time. And we need to be careful about what we say to ourselves. Try this for a minute...think about it as the "Essence of Age"! |
