She stared at the paper in her hand
a dollar bill
it had been such a long time
since she’d seen money
or held it
or spent it

it looked different somehow

She smoothed the corners
lovingly
caressed the picture
admired the writing
she couldn’t stop
staring at it
a dollar

what would she buy?

Her mind whirred with thoughts
so many things
a decision
she had to do it
just make up her mind
and decide.

Someone walked by
she quickly put
the dollar away
hid it in the inside pocket
of the ragged army coat
she found in
the back of the Goodwill

She shuffled down the alley
her secret money
safe
from thieves
and the government
who stole
everything

It had been such a long time
since she had money
since she spent it
since she knew
what it was

She hid behind a box
in the alley
waiting
for the demons
to find her
to steal her money
and hurt her
again

It had been such a long time
since she knew
where her mind was
and what she
had done
to lose it

(big hugggssssssss) Oh Sharon, this is so very saddening, dearest friend, how dreadful it is to live in a capitalistic world which will only kill more people than provide! Sometimes my dad even snickers and does  ahlf-laugh when I tell him that and says "Well, what could our world be without money?" which feels hopeless to me to hear many say that! (sad sigh) God Bless You, sweet friend, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Sharon, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,

Hi Poet de Vine, I don’t know if we’ve met yet. I really liked this. I can really respect someone who speaks out for those, who are rarely heard.

Thank You, this was very nice.

Indeed - We know far too little of this growing corner of the world - But the cardboard boxes are getting larger, and they'll be extending out into the streets before long... This is a strong piece, PdV - Thanks for writing it...

Sharon, this is such a tender-hearted and compassionate poem. It touched my heart.
I wish that I knew more to do for these poor people.
I heard that some of the mental hospitals put people out a few years ago. The ones who didn't have someone to help them, had to do the best they could at taking care of themselves. I wonder if they are still doing that?
Hugs to you and them
Ethel

It is a sad commentary of our society that so many mentaly disrurbed people are homeless.Uncared for and wandering the streets alone.

Thank you for reading. This was inspired by seeing a homeless person this week. Someone handed her a dollar and she just looked at it like it was foreign currency.
