Yellow Goddess

state of confusion

She hates summertime -
it's all coffee-stained skies
and small suns bouncing off bumpers;

spring’s mess left behind
for the next season’s supper -
redwoods, eucalypti
and pines.

Her lungs don’t work too well,
too many winters of folks setting match to wood
and summers when the woods burn
down to charred stubs.

Knows when wildfires are coming, too,
her prophecies good enough
to make neighbors pack up their cars
with pets and photos,

just in case.
