Where are they now
when the flags are gone
that flew from the spired dome,
from the heights where their eyes
were uplifted to,
as the measure of pride in their souls?

Where are they now
when the bugles are gone
that challenged the beat of their hearts
with a cadence that throbbed
from the halls to the grounds,
and brought them up marching as one?

Where are they now
when the battles are gone
that drove them to rage in a day
and tore from the breast
of the mother, her son,
and armed him to march in parades?

Where are they now
when the armies are gone
that answered the animal plea,
saluted the flags
believing the song as they marched,
with the drums, to their graves?

In our hearts
and memories,
in our books,
and history...

lest they ne'er be forgotten.

Thank you, thank you.

You are welcome.

The cliche which applies to ANY war is: "We all died a little in that damned war."

And this is why I wandered to the 50th page of poems here...
just to find this.
I'm glad I did. Thank you for sharing.

Yes, "where are they now?"
Their minds and emotions (if they are even still alive)
will never be the same as before. My Dad still
has nightmares from things he went through in World War II.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and feelings.

AniKay83 ~ Thank you for taking time to read this and for your comments.

wranx ~ Well, sure, once an old freak, always an old freak; I can't help it. *grin* War is one of humans' timeless maladies.  Doesn't change if it is with rocks or is satellite tracked and live on CNN.  It is a horror which cyclically draws us.  Thank you for reading and for your insights.

garysgirl ~ They sleep in the gardens of stones.  Thank you for reading this and for your comments.

Earth Angel ~ We can think of other things, but that does mean they are forgotten.  Thank you for your time and for your insight.

Enchantress ~ Thank you for reading this and for taking time to comment.

suthern ~ Well, OK, but I will tell the poetry police to watch you in case you wander off. *laugh*  Thank you for reading my poem and for taking time to comment.
