When Mockingbirds Cry

Dying was what others did, not I.
It never entered my mind that time
would eventually pass me by,
that I could die,
but when death came
I was there . . . waiting,
and he took you instead.

And I still live,
spend most of my days
kneeling before the rickety,
weather-beaten cross,
here in the cottonwood’s shade . . . waiting.

When death comes,
he’ll find I already died,
I’ve been dead since he lifted your soul,
since he left you lying motionless, pale,
waiting only to become earth again.

He'll find me here
just as I was those many years ago,
waiting . . . waiting,
to hear mockingbirds cry.

...saw a mockingbird sitting on a cross in a cemetary, and of course people around other graves visiting departed ones and this came to me while there...so here it is a few days later...

jwesley - I've not seen your writings for a while. I'm not sure if you've been on PIP, but it's good to read yours...

jwesley, this was a wonderful write indeed, filled with the sadness of lose; when the heart dies, what is left?
I first thought of the war, then I thought of a partner dying first, we all wait, knowing one day it will come.

Sincerely
Rick

A deeply heartfelt expression, easily related to. 'Tiz difficult to be "left behind." However fond memories find a way to gradually replace the grief.

A very well written piece!

To say I was touched by your words is an understatement.  How easily I could relate on so many levels to sad words.  When my father died four years ago I felt that such a large part of me went with him and now it's like I have no left hand for my right.
Thank you for sharing your most innermost thoughts through your talented pen.

(big hugggssssssss) Oh James, this is so sadly beautiful, sweet friend, my heart sends many angel hugs your way as every loved one should always have someone close to show how much they are loved and not be left alone in the silent still! (sad sigh) You are one very compassionate and loving soul, sweet friend, God Bless You, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet James, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

beautiful in it's sadness
listening to the refrain of a goodbye cry, repeated within the cry of that mockingbird
