From the trail that led to a secret meet
a bunker called attention to an historic feat
leaders in starched collars on the Eastern Front
hammered out the details about a new establishment
top level visit between two heads of state
but a peaceful accord..brought another fate.

they don't make bunkers like they used to
they don't repair shoes like they used to...too.

and the feet that walked to and from the hideout
are long reduced to bones as are the owners
and the voices which coerced each other
from the earth's depths have long disappeared
carried into the wind across political borders
continuously moveable borders without frills...

they don't make bunkers like they used to
they don't repair shoes like they used to...too.

people emphasized values of historical discourse
then entertained friends with verbal intercourse
in comparison of a horrid past to a brighter present
flushed from thicket roosts, there flew a pheasant

from the trail that led to such hidden encounters
and the beach coves of Anzio where they lay concealed
foreign footprints have long been eroded
the basis of peace has long been eroded..too

they don't make bunkers like they used to
they don't repair shoes like they used to...too.
