To the Scholar

Study on, young wily one
and may your studies be merry
while i, such a wastrel,
live life quite to the contrary.

Deepen your darkness and quell my soul
or sell them both for profit;
you can study your darkness and also my soul
and never have hope to get off it.

Your darkness will deepen--
all steeples will steepen--
'til needles make blood fall at will;
Low morale will rock you--
your studies wlll lock you--
until you have drunken your fill.

You've no time t'be merry
while you study the sherry
with little or no time to drink:
You boggle the berry
with spirits contrary
giving you no time to blink.
