Underneath
a brilliant sun
I smiled as a donkey
passed, laughing at
the sound of hooves
upon the stone

I watched the
salamanders scurry
kicking pebbles as
my mother lead
me through the
cobblestone streets
of Misserio

Up past the shrine
of the black madonna
Up past the notices
pasted to walls in reverance
to the deceased
we wound our way
along the mountainside
it seemed forever

At last we reached
our destination,
a relative of some sort
and as they recollected
I walked to the terrace
looking out over the valley
and saw the paths wrap
around the moutain
like snakes

I shouted as I
picked out my
grandfather's house
the lemon orchards
the piazza
the old church
the fontana

My mother smiled
she knew the beauty
of the view its why
she brought me here
back home the only
view I'd ever had
overlooked housing projects
and parking lots
concrete and glass

**Misserio Is my mother's hometown in Sicily

Raph, this is so beautiful. You painted
such a picture that we didn't need an
actual painting to know what it looked like.
Just beautiful, buddy.

Your heart speaking here, remembering so beautifully the visit to Misserio.... not far from the Aetna, wow!
Most enjoyable!
.... e posso immaginare il profumo di questi luoghi, fiori di limoni e di arance ....
Bellissimo.
C'รจ un bravissimo poeta lontano lontano che ha radici a Misserio ...
Abbracci.

You know I am part Italian myself and proud to have lived in the old country many years. Sicily has so many beautiful spots to see... must return there myself to find an old friend and his family in Trapani...the people always gentile and there are some who remember still the liberation Canadians participated in during the last war.Nice poetic vignette.
