Birthday Cake My candles too numbered to stand on a cake My wishes too many to name My breath, though too weak, not a wish I’d forsake For the quest in each flickering flame Ten candles I’d burn for the poor and oppressed And snuff out the fires with a dream Ten flares I would light for the ill and distressed A prayer to douse each lighted beam Ten matches I'd strike for the lonely of heart Ten eyes from which friendship would seep Ten torches I’d place for the hungriest souls To follow the tenets they keep Ten lanterns I’d sway in the lighthouse of life To guide wayward youth from it’s path I’ve ten candles left for my heart to ignite And grant me my wishes at last My years number sixty, my cake can contain Ten candles of justice that’s due I’ll blow out just nine with the breath that remains And leave one candle burning for you Elizabeth Santos |
