Who talked to god
the last time he was in town?
Did he ask about me
or check if I was around?
Lots of bumper stickers
say he's been found;
was he really lost,
or just being a clown?
Who talked to god
the last time he was in town?

I'm not sure right now
if my soul's been saved.
Last night
it was not redemption it craved.
Walking Bleeker Street,
my brain was enslaved
by a body
I do believe misbehaved.
I'm not sure right now
if my soul's been saved.

Do you think perhaps
he's got a seat on his train;
one I could pay for
with what's left of my brain?
I'm good at stories,
should I try to explain;
or are my hopes powder
and it's starting to rain?
Do you think perhaps
he's got a seat on his train?

So who talked to god
the last time he was in town?
I keep on praying
but he's not making a sound.
I'm getting older
and still screwing around;
I'm pretty sure I know
where my soul is bound.
So who talked to god
the last time he was in town?

Icebox,

Well, this reads smoothly...an interesting write as is especially the title.

Hugs, Pat

Icebox this is honestly the best poem I've read in a while.  I really liked this.  I myself can't say I've seen him around town but maybe I'm just looking in the wrong places.  These words are something I can see myself writing.  It felt like I was looking into a mirror.  I can't say enough.
Good stuff
Joe

I talk to him quite often, but as of yet I haven't heard him reply...

I enjoyed your words

regards2you ~ Thank you for reading it.  The title came from a verse I eliminated.  For me this was one of a "type" of poem that builds in my head and then comes out all at once.  This one came with music, but I don't write music.  The music was tinny syncopated piano cross threaded with a muted trumpet blues riff.

Joe Houck ~ Well, I am glad you enjoyed it.  Who knows, maybe it really was your poem and it simply landed in my head.  *smile*  Thank you for your comments.

Midnitesun ~ Cool!!!  I have a whole weekend to party my ass off.  Thanks for telling me!!!

nakdthoughts ~ Hmmm...so, should I worry if I do hear an answer?  *grin*

The subject of God and the questions we ask are so very well formed in your lines, Icebox.  In my humble opinion, God speaks to us in so many ways but we just don't hear him - it's not his fault.  It's no coincidence that you should be thinking of him.  The next stage is believing and after that you will hear him ... in your "gut"  (intuition)!  Listen to that for that is how he leads.

ice:

brilliant write here and well . . .
I have never heard from him personally
(the voices I hear . . . trust me they are not Him) lol
but I do see him in other ways . . .
like the flowers I plant - the sun shining -my son . . . and even in things which most would chalk off to coincidence.

I am far from a religious person - entirely spiritual at best but this write breathes
all of what society has done and is to blame for . . .

nice job ice

Honeybunch ~ Thank you for reading my poem.  I appreciate your comments.  My thoughts on god are varied.  I can not even take seriously the concept of a god that has a specific gender.  I do believe that most humans have a basic need for a structured belief system on which to rely when the day to day business of life gets overwhelming. In that frame of reference, the common definitions of god work fine and provide avenues for communication.  I have learned in painful ways that when I try to explain my beliefs, the most common reaction is negative, even hostile.   I am at peace with my beliefs but seldom find ways to share them successfully.

When I was a young boy, I drowned in extremely cold salt water and was clinically dead for at least a half hour. I have a clear recall of the event.  After that, I had great difficulty with my religious lessons.  To me, listening to the concepts of organized religion sounds little different from listening to a child explain the story line of a favorite cartoon.  I most often have found your comments to be calming and insightful and I do appreciate them greatly.

littlewing ~ Yes, there is a sense of forces of existence in all things.  "Lift a rock,and you will find me; split a board and I am there."  It truly is through the eyes of a young child that we can see the infinite.  Thank you for reading my poem and for taking the time to comment.

is god there or is he hidden?
does he come so brashly bidden?

keep havin' a ball! he won't care.

ah, Bleeker St. I lived in the village many years ago.

"keep it simple"

Thank you for reading my poem.

Icebox, thank you for the "discussion".  We all have to find what works for us.  I lean towards being open to a higher power - perhaps my "soul" or unconscious mind or spirit self.  "Be still" - how many people are "still" these days?  How many people find time to be still?  If we can blot out the world, we can learn so many things - can't prove them, but learn we do! I follow your writings closely because I see a progression similar to mine and through that progression we will find a "peace surpassing all understanding".  I'm not there just yet.  Take care!

Honeybunch ~ *smile*  I agree with this completely.  it is very likely that you will get there before me.  I have some debts that must be paid and this lifetime will not make that possible.  If there is an empty seat near a window, put my name on it, OK?

Icebox, the seat is already there - your name is on it ... I didn't put it there, you did.  Repaying debts is easy - acknowledge the wrong and then forgive yourself.  I've not read the bible but some things we just know ... "forgive them for they know not what they do".  Oh hell, it's hard forgiving those who have wronged us but if we try hard and long enough, we will!

I suppose that is true, but "I'm sorry" just is not always enough for some things.  I do believe that in time all debts are settled.
