Tis but the wind, that wicked wind
that blows in howls and shakes the floor.
Tis nothing cursed that might ascend
from deepest bowels of hellish lore.

For on the night when ravens fly
in black to light the fence post drear
a chilling wind shall moan, shall cry
to one Lenore, my lass, my dear.

This lust I feel as dreams do skew
the mind in stir of waking need,
were shadows but of raven’s hue
when anguish heard brings eyes to bleed.

A hurried tap and rap upon
the shutters bring a halted beat
of one’s faint heart and rack drawn bone
till ‘gain the tap, the rap retreat.

For is this bird, this feathered foe
outside the door in waiting gale?
A messenger of death, I know
who brings to me but posted mail.

What post should come to Nevermore
where darkness falls at mid of day?
Might this be of my dear Lenore
before she passed from arms away?

I shall not read nor open this
for within my dark fears reside
But for my love, I save this kiss
till ever more the raven cried.
