THE SCHOOLTEACHER AND THE LIBRARIAN Beneath the tombstone, Carved and gray, The loving pair Together lay. For fifty years They were ne’er apart, One died of cancer, One - a broken heart. The town has grieved And shed its tears, For this beloved couple Of so many years. They filled our lives With wit and charm, Not the typical Librarian and school ‘marm’. We know by now They have come face to face With Eternal Life And Holy Grace. God embraces them, Knows well, their names. “Welcome, my beloved sons, Jeremy and James”. I be me BUT who does me be? This is a lovely write, with a neat twist at the end. I'm a reader - not a writer. |

This is nice. I like the fast-paced flow, it was a very easy read. I also quite like the title, it really caught my attention. Good work, SPIRIT. ![]() Parasite "Faith" means the will to avoid knowing what is true. |

Funny! I don't consider this really sad - they had 50 devoted years together. Their relationship was a lot longer than a lot of marriages. They were respected and loved by their neighbors and they made their transition basically together. Then they were embraced lovingly and welcomed by Him who matters most. Thanks for all the kind remarks, I have to say this is one of my favorites. [This message has been edited by SPIRIT (02-19-2003 05:49 PM).] |

I didn't get this as particularly sad, I really liked the message of 'acceptance' it gave. |

I really liked this poem. Probably the best of yours that I have read. I liked the ending so very very much because it breaks the mold of so many different stereotypes that we can tend to have concerning love and choice of profession, etc. etc. Very good poetry!!! -Bob |

This absolutely stabbed at my heart Spirit. My Mom is a retired high school librarian, and my Dad was a college professor. I believe very much that they will one day be reunited in lasting, eternal love. Thank you for sharing this beautiful piece. |

Your description of the town's response tells so much in this story. It tells of worth, and lives forever changed. Well done, Spirit. |

The content of this poem lived up to its intriguing title. The theme was handled with finesse and respect without inappropriate intrusion of over-sentimentality. The ending: GREAT! Good work, SPIRIT, resulting in a dignified and warmly affectionate memorial to two human beings who, in passing, left behind them "footprints in the sands of time". Patrick Talty |
