Tall tails from an old ship's cat

I had a long talk with Arthur
He is the most extraodinary cat
There is no one with whom I would rather
Enjoy a long fireside chat.

He talks a lot about sea birds
And the various sorts of rats
He finds people rather absurd
Much purr-ferring his fellow cats

He will happily show you his medals
One for each rat that he caught
And a big one for scratching a rebel
In a far off colonial port**

And how many a sad feline maiden
Was waved goodbye with a paw
And of dogs with scars he embellished
With a lightening flash of his claw!

He is old and stiff and grey now
Whiskers are dropping and pads are sore
Faltering now is that deep Miaow
That once so loudly called,
"Whose for a run ashore?"

He still listens and if anything stirs
He quickly inspects his room
Most carefully under the chairs
And the mouse hole behind the broom

But for now all is quiet
He may perhaps enjoy a cigar
And tell me of his days as a sailor
Tall tails from strange lands afar!

Arthur
* the colonial port was New York

A purr-fectly lovely, entertaining piece of verse. Move over, T.S.Eliot! My vote is in!

Just a small detail: Perhaps you should change "quite" to "quiet" in the final stanza.
