"Young man , can you tell me", my mom used to say,
it seemed at the time. almost everyday,
when I kept protesting, was not time for bed,
"who in the world put such thoughts in your head?"

She said that quite often, when-ever I'd slack.
A litany, sort of a pat on the back,
as if I were innocent ,strangely, somehow,
so, who put such thoughts in my head here and now?

The time I was "Superman", thought I could fly,
my head hit a brick, I darn near lost an eye.
What I choose to remember's not how much I bled
but, "who in the world put such thoughts in your head?"

For all of those other times things turned out wrong,
of trials and errors, the same old sad song.
No longer in ear-shot, so here in it's stead
it's "Who in the world put such thoughts in your head?"

Well, Mom, I'm much older now, you've passed away.
The litany's repeated itself I must say.
My sons have all heard it, and tears have been shed,
this time it is you, put such thoughts in my head.

Dedicated with loving gratitude,in memory of,
Irene Bare Kleist

Well Doc,
I've always liked your style. Bless your mom and may she rest in peace. All her efforts ultimately paid off! Excellent write and wonderful tribute. Way to go dad. Hope you plan to submit this to the book. Then I'll come back and vote.

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.

(big hugggssssssss) Oh William, this is such a heartaching write, dearest friend, it is saddening how the world can paralyze us all and take innocence away and how knowing the truth is troublesome! (sad sigh) This is powerful, sweet friend, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet William, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,

Doc, I think this tribute to your Mom is beautiful, too. If you will put this for submission to the book, I also will vote for it. This would be beautiful in the book.

EA, Nan, Larry C, Noah, waldopepper, serenity,Dawn G, garysgirl,
Thank you all, and my apologies for not reading the instructions first about book submissions. I actually had no intentions of submitting anything, and then this popped (or is that "Mommed") into my head. Thanks much again.

Denise,
Thank you. Knowing your penchant for sonnets, perhaps one of those will be written someday also. Be well.
Doc
suthern,
Many thanks. I went on record saying I didn't
plan to submit anything for the second printing, but, I also said that might change. This one was from the heart, plain and simple, thus my decision to submit. Thanks again.
Doc
serenity,
I sure hope you don't mind my calling you by your former name. Actually, the next time the name change thing comes up, I think I'll change mine to "Doc"( I'm thinking lately simple is better). Thanks for being you.
Doc
christian,
Thanks. It's been a number of years, yet, the memory is still fresh. She was quite a remarkable woman.
Doc
Enchantress,
Thank you. This one is not for me (just in case you missed that, which I doubt). My mother was not only intelligent and witty, she was the "glue" which held our family together, and a true friend. It is only fitting that I submit this in her memory.
And, just for the heck of it, yes, it is possible to laugh and cry at the same time.
Doc

She sounds very kindly. I hope when I'm gone my boys think of me as well as you think of her, the love shines through here.

My dad was the one with all the nifty little sayings that I passed down to my children and now I find myself still saying them to the grandchildren. I enjoyed this visit with your mother very much. I happily cast my vote.

Yo Doc!  First of all, great poem.  Moms and dads have a way of leaving their marks on our souls and in this case it has served you well.  The one that helps me sometimes get through the day comes from my father, "They can kill ya, but they can't eat cha... becuase that's against the law."  I think it appropriate for a soon to be elementary teacher.     That said, I'm sure your mom is proud of the person she helped shape and mold into PIP's own Doc. Moose.  I bow to you and yours with vote in hand.

P.S.  You're not allowed to change your name.  Only the Stute has that power, and as Supreme King of the East Wing I forbid any alteration to your title, alias, nickname, pen name, pseudonym, sobriqent, designation, or nomenclature.  Not to mention any other word that can be found in the thesaurus under "name."  That is, as long as it's OK with you.  Peace! my friend.

I love this and only hope that some of my adages will serve my kids as well as your Mom's served you and your kids. Definitely got my vote (and yes I can understand the laughing and crying at the same time). Very touching tribute to what sounds like a very beautiful lady.

This is wonderful Doc!  How many times I hear my mother's words coming straight out of my mouth - and sometimes my Dad's, too!  A great dedication!  Thank you.

I think that one of the greatest judgements of how well a parent did is how she is remembered by her children. Obviously your mother was a very special lady and you have penned a special piece to display your thoughts of her. Well done, Doc...
