Blue Tones

She’s singing in a voice that tastes
of Johnny Walker Black.
The tenor sax starts pledging love,
and then gets lost in scat.

How can she sing this ache I feel
and make it come out sweet?
How can a trumpet generate
this sweaty body heat?

Somewhere up front a drunk calls out,
he wants another beer;
there’s playful shrieks and giggles
from a table in the rear.

But I don’t mind the crowd at all,
or smell the drifting smoke,
the cigarettes and cheap perfume
so thick you almost choke.

I’m caught up in the voice, the horns,
my world is drenched in sound.
There’s nothing but blue tones and me
when jazz comes raining down.

Let me be the first to "click"
once you mark this for book submission...
Surely...others will follow...
because it's downright fine!

E-mail me when it's fixed - and I'll be back!

Having worked in radio for 15 years, most of it jazz formated, I'm hip to the feel of your words.  Thanks for sharing.  Voting.

(big hugggssssssss) Yay! Oh Nancy, this is beautiful, sweet friend, I find it magical when music seems to recognize exactly how we feel and the melody gets us dancing, to me Latin music does that the most of all! (sigh) This is wonderful, sweet friend, you have my 12-bar blues vote, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Nancy, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,

Well Nan, I know nothing of the environment. But I love jazz almost as much as I love this poem. (Jazz is my favorite music!) Awesome write. This has to be in the book.

Karilea, I swear I clicked the book thingy the first time. I must have clumsy fingers. Thank you so much for letting me know right away, so I could fix it.

Andrew, I take you for the expert, so if you say it works, I know it works. Thanks.

Suthern girl, Thank You! I wanted to set the mood, and bring it home.

Noah, you're always so kind, thanks!

Ethel, thanks for your jazzy reply.

EA, I'm glad you came back for another look. I smoothed it up some before reposting it, and I hope it helped.

Enchantress-hugs right back at ya!

Balladeer- I had to do a bit of rewrite to get the meter but I'm glad I did, since it earned your 'Bravo' !

Larry C-isn't jazz grand?

Janet Marie, thank you so much for such kind words. I've a big grin on my face.

Nan darling heart sometimes I lose my way to the light and seem to wander in darkness for an eternity. But when I do, and of late I really do, I know that your words will shine the light that signals the way home. Thank you for this delightful gem darling one it is utterly utterly wonderful. I will try to come in more often, its just right now it is really difficult, sometimes a pain is better not shared, it simply hurts too much. But be assured that when I do find my way here it is your work I’ll cling.

This is truly wonderful darling one, and gets my vote, and if I could give it multiple one I would, I truly would, the book wouldn’t really be worth its paper if you weren’t included in it

This is exquisite writing, I knew it would be because YOU wrote it.

Love and warm stuff

What a great poem!  Perfect in the story line.  It also hits a note in me regarding jazz.  Needles to say, this poem bleongs in the book.

Oh Yeah! Your skill as a painter of images that leap out and pull one willingly into that atmosphere is magical! As a muso myself and a jazz lover who has been there many times, you certainly brought memories alive with this gem! Thanks for the feeling! I look forward to seeing it in the anthology.

Wow,Nancy,I love stories that transport you.You made me think of the "Blue Note" up in NYC and other jazz clubs I've been to.You write so eloquently and concise. There is a saying,"Always leave'em wanting more.",and you did so.Sometimes certain poems can be a bit too long and possibly lose your attention along the way. This offering makes one want to read it several times over just to savour it.Very nice.and you have my vote.Hope it makes it in the book.

Sandra-I'm so glad you enjoyed this one. I'm pleased with the way it turned out.

Street Heart-How very nice of you! I tried to get the feel of jazz in this, and I'm so pleased it worked for you.

Bridgitte-You have a treat in store! There's all kinds of jazz, from the kind that makes you get up and move to the kind that makes you sit and cry, and everything in between. I recommend you listen to some and see what style you like. You'll have to like one of them.
