Standing in the forevers of this day you wait silently, alone with cool crimson dreams of how it was in the times we loved best under sunset lace. Checkered and elusive were the ways of our life together in spotted light, broken pages between a running and long past race, lost to the wagers of a costly and cashed-in embrace. Sunset lace left us with no trace, the patterns gone in breathless regrets for a love that held on to the heat's last gasp, a slow summer burn that the nights could not return. With nothing left to say we smiled for a while, 'til the tears came, catching those dying rays on your salt-streaked face, and I knew we'd moved on without a kiss for the pain. Too often now, I wonder where you are and how you've been, as I walk along with the tides that wash in another end, another sunlit mosaic of tattered lace and empty space. And I catch myself smiling for the sounds that I hear over the pounding surf and the disappearing sands, of a risk we took once that sang of life and then died on demand. Sunset lace left us with no trace, the patterns gone in breathless regrets for a love that held on to the heat's last gasp, a slow summer burn that the nights could not return. |
