Window to past opens again
thinking of the loved one’s she lost
Too always keep them in her mind
her promise...whatever the cost

Eyes open…sitting in silence
looking at pictures in her mind
Searching for that which she has lost
memories… she will never find

Each day she faces a new world
hoping to find that which she needs
Looking within herself for hope
please God...answer my prayer she pleads

She remembers the times they shared
special times spent in wedded bliss
Moments bring comfort to her mind
now gone… replaced by emptiness

As time passes each day she cries
wondering if she said goodbye
Still searching for her memories
she cries...without knowing why

No visitors again today
always alone… or so it seems
She wouldn’t know them anyway
loved one’s...or those within her dreams

She wonders what tomorrow brings
when she can’t remember today
We need a cure for this disease
that takes our memory away

Very powerful and true write, Paul.  My grandfather had alzheimer's and it can sure be tough on a family to watch a loved one go through this.  You have my vote for this one.

Yes, you did write this well. A touching, heartbreaking part of the living dead. It is as difficult for those who love the one afflicted.

Paul,

Although I have never known anyone with Alzheimers, I have known someone with Dementia. I heard a song on the radio a few years ago that talked of the pain of Alzheimers and I thought the song had handled the subject with so much truth and grace. That is until I just read this.  You have handled a very sensitive subject with so much love and respect which is something I know my neighbor with Dementia and his wife were not subject to very often. I applaud you on your talent and your sensitivity. Thank you so much for sharing such a powerful piece with us and I just know it will touch everyone who reads it in the very core of their being.

Hello Paul

Your words were so heartfelt and need to be heard.  I have written two poems now about Alzheimers disease and although I don't know anyone personally who is suffering I would imagine it to be absolutely soul destroying.  My vote has been cast and I hope you are well.

Take care......Sue

poignantly done, compassionately understood as best as one "outside" is able, I'm sure

My friend relishes opportunity to tell of the special mementoes in her apartment that mark special times in her life.

I think it comforts her to recall things clearly, even if they were long ago.

Thanks for sharing, Paul.

Imagine the fear they must have inside knowing something is wrong but cannot do a thing about it. I remember the fear in my mother's eyes when we were told of her illness. But when doctors say the mind is gone I wonder. Because she knew her pet name I had given years ago. I would walk into the hospital room the last week of her death and say "Hi Toots how are you doing." She would respond with her eyes. For she could no longer talk or move.

VAS~~~So much is unknown about this terrible disease. Like you say one minute their minds are perfectly normal and the next totally different.I have a brother that although doesn't have Alzhiemers his mind works the same way, he can remember things from when he was a child, but can't remember yesterday.I understand the doctors are making great progress in a cure for this disease. Thanks for reading and sharing with me your poem...Paul

Bonniej~~~ Iwill search for and read you poem. I can't imagine what your family and your mother went through, but I know it was hard for everyone. Thanks for taking time to read and for your caring reply...Paul
