the wind blows heavy tonight

the sand forms thick against the tent walls
and I wonder if the sand flies will
be kept at bay so that sleep will come
for the day has been long and tiring
the sun was far too hot today
and the smoke and smell filled my lungs again
I'm tired of being here
     I miss much tonight
my home, my family, my way of life

my way of life
     it's why I'm here isn't it?
to defend a way of life
but, who is to say that my way of life is
better or worse than any other?

ah, but now it's too late for me to wonder
about such things
time to put aside this book and rest again
for this book speaks of things that I find
     too much of here
mourning,
          the poor,
                    hunger and thirst,
                                        persecution
I've had my fill of them all
seen too much of them for a lifetime
and yet, the words will not let go of me
     even here,
                even in sleep

blest are they

as if their screams of pain and heartbreak
were prayers to an uncaring god who would
rather they suffer first
so that they might better appreciate
the blessings that they are to receive
when they die
     and they will die
          their fate has been sealed

sealed by the sting of shrapnel
sealed by the collapse of wood and brick
sealed by the close of the coffin lid
(or, the box if they're lucky)
sealed by the last kiss of a loved one
before the last touch of earth
welcomes them back to that which they came from

blest are they

but they think that we are the ones
     who have been blessed
I wonder why
perhaps it is because they seem to think that
we have everything compared to them
but, I wonder if they realize
that sometimes, in a quiet moment
we'd give it all up, in a second
to be them, simple and free

blest are they

today, I walk among them again
down this road of mud and rain
I can feel their eyes on me
     almost pleading in a way
     but yet,
with a quiet calm in them
a calm that I envy
one that I wish that I had in my own eyes

the calm of acceptance
          the calm of life

the calm of the blessed

blest are they

A beautiful write, though sad.
A good submission for the book.

Sir Sven,
glad you came back in time to repost...

as if their screams of pain and heartbreak
were prayers to an uncaring god who would
rather they suffer first
so that they might better appreciate
the blessings that they are to receive
when they die
     and they will die
          their fate has been sealed

enjoyed your offering...admiring the way you put yourself in the shoes of the peace soldiers in these war-torn countries and write from their perspective...the stanza that i highlighted was food for thought for me

(tears fall down my cheeks) And ashamed be those who keep digressing from the meaning of freedom and liberty and safety, as hopefully some day they can learn from history and know only peace is the answer as those who think otherwise have not the slightest clue what freedom is! (wipes tears) Blessed be the peacemakers, sweet friend, I light a candle with the rest of them, God Bless You, we all love you so much, you have my praying vote! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Sven, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,

A thoroughly majestic litany for serenity, security and basic peace of mind.  Quiet, subtle tones of patriotism laced with a deep appreciation for the freedoms that, sadly, many of us do take for granted.  Very well done my friend.

This not only gets my vote, it goes into my library. This was very thought-provoking and heart-wrenching for me. I hate thinking of our soldiers over there, and the people who live there... the thoughts and choices they make, the things they see, and how uncertain and indefinate everything is. But.. you wrote this well.

Oh, make me Thine forever
And should I fainting be
Lord, let me never ever
Outlive my love for Thee

Sven,

It is 3:14 pm on Wednesday. The world is waiting and watching. How timely for me to be reading your poem. Outside my window the weather is gloomy and I cannot concentrate on work. I read your poem with heartfelt compassion, I feel fear and sadness. Tonight I will go listen to Joan Baez and hear her lament for peace. She will bring back memories of days gone by when I was young and consumed by the Vietnam war. Now I am older and we beat the drums again but, this time I know the consequences are far greater - even that is relative - we have still much to learn. I weep with your words and I pray that humanity will come out the other side. I'm reminded of a song that JB once sang " you were right from your side and I was right from mine"

Yes a thought provoking write.

Thanks

SG
