Tarbiah
By: Noah Eaton
1/1/03

Stare into the red summer sun
Kneel upon the starry sands like an anchor
There are a thousand and one Arabic nights to discover
Let's go and publish another

And the underworld is unleashed beneath your feet
Shy I am but seduced I will be
And I feel the pulse
I feel the vibe
I feel the motion
I feel the communion
My spirit is rejuvenated

So I'm learning my own dance
Show me how you shake those hips
I have a tattoo etched on my lung
Of an ancient camaraderie that quivers with my lips

Set my soul on flame one more time
So you can watch these rainbows unveil
So you can feel the smoke rise
You can feel the flame shine
You know this is ethereal
You know this is the deal

Lift your tarbiah
No disciple can own you
You've got expression
You've got soul, so let's rendezvous
Abundance has always been inside of you

Date palms shake in your flickering shadows
Seems you have some of the blood of Al-Farabi
You are an innocent temptress
You wear silver and you wear it gracefully

We all need time to learn our maqam
Say not a word for the whole composition is compelling
Let the music pull you down
Shake your Taar and spin around in circles till you get dizzy

Arch your back and play your Tabla
Warble like the secret of the Shabbabeh
Perform your little taqsim, no need to be shy
For you are the gate
You are the window
You are the progress
You are the widow...

Lift your tarbiah
No disciple can own you
You've got expression
You've got soul, so let's rendezvous
Abundance has always been inside of you
Wear that kaffia of gold
Strut in that bedleh
We all need some suspense sometime
So emerge all your essence from underneath
Heaven knows you've got to dance your dance

You move mysteriously
Glimpsing the eyes of your spirit
Even when you know everything has to end sometime
Beginning is the first word that comes to your mind
And you reconvene
And you proceed
And you lose yourself in a world of dreams
Genuflecting on every heartbeat...

Lift your tarbiah
No disciple can own you
You've got expression
You've got soul, so let's rendezvous
Abundance has always been inside of you
Wear that kaffia of gold
Strut in that bedleh
We all need some suspense sometime
So emerge all your essence from underneath
Heaven knows you've got to dance your dance

Heaven knows you've got to dance your dance...
.
.
.

(Here are the definitions of some special words used in my poem, from Arabic culture)

Tarbiah: A white veil
Kaffia: Head scarf
Bedleh: A cabaret-style beaded bra/belt/skirt/body stocking costume that a belly dancer wears for a performance
Taar: A large tambourine like a flat drum
Tabla: A stringed instrument played with the feet
Taqsim: A slow, solo belly-dance to a solo instrument playing
Maqam: The main style of Middle Eastern music

I just love this, Noah.  Sometimes it's hard to write poetry in second person and still do justice to the imagery involved, but you've described a very vivid scene even in a poem largely comprised of imperative phrases.

I just love your use of vocab and repetition, this sounds like it borders on poetry and is almost a song, which is appropriate to the musical theme you've used in the poem.  Is this about anybody in particular, or is it just a general ode to a musical preformer?

Either way it's excellent poetry.  Great choice for submission, Noah.

i love the last two lines of the first stanza. they really drive the whole poem.

i did not understand the third repetition of the last line. i feel it may be too much. you however, know your work best and if you would enlighten me as to what you meant by it i would be most grateful.

(smiles) Oh Zaheer, these are song lyrics/poetry I wrote and somehow I have a habit of emphasizing the final line at the end of a song, almost as though it is the motto of the song, the gist, I kind of use it as a tool of deliverance, but can understand if you felt it was too redundant! (big hugggssssssss) Thanks for your wonderful comment, I love your poes by the way!

Love,
Noah Eaton

Noah I look up some of your vocabulary and I have to admit I can't find them under your spellings, which then makes it hard for me to understand the whole of the poem. Seems like no one else is having that problem.

Maybe you could email me with the definitions of some of the words. I would appreciate it. I know it would help me to enjoy your work more.  *s

**for example tarbiah, Tarr, taqsim.
I am probably showing my lack of knowledge here

I love the way this reads and looks but like NakedThoughts I am somewhat ignorant about some of the words. I presumed that Tarbiah means her veil, although I can find it in no dictionary on the Internet or in my own dictionaries at home. Then I tried finding
Kaffia, Bedleh, Taar, Tabia and Taqsim with no success I'm afraid.  Could you please enlighten me in my ignorance as I want to cast my vote. I love it, but need to understand these words - I even went into a couple of Muslim sites and still could not come up with the words. Thank you, like I said I love the way it sounds and flows just need a little help.

Dear Noah, This is a keeper, a real beauty.

I have a friend who bellydances to stay fit.  It is quite entrancing.  I was amazed at the energy it takes and the discipline.  You captured this well with your words.

"Lift your tarbiah
No disciple can own you......
Abundance has always been inside of you"

You can live off the energy expressed here!!!

This is definately one for our newest book.

Noah,

This whole poem, presentation, graphic, expression.... simply everything fits perfectly together. It's just all simply Gorgeous!!!  Oh how I wish that I was more like Al-Farabi, but I think that your poem as does this beautiful dance of which you write transcends variations in language and in culture. I think that we can all get lost in it no matter what language we speak or no matter what nationality of which we might be associated.  Again, this is a most beautiful creation my friend, thank you for sharing, and I am believing that many many more will enjoy reading your poem in years to come. God bless you.

Noah:  This is truly awesome!  I'm glad you explained some of the words, as I was not familiar with most of them. I re-read it after reading the definitions and enjoyed it even more. Of course, I am voting for it!

Noah,

I have read and voted, but just had to read again and comment

"You move mysteriously
Glimpsing the eyes of your spirit"

This is an awesome line, as is the whole poem. My applause to you for this wonderful piece.

Loved it lil brother, and it is a very sensuous, exotic work of art in your words!! I especially enjoyed learning what those words meant, as it increased the pleasure of the read!!  My check is definitely in the box for this one!!

Beautiful, I love the motion of it. You weave a wonderful rhythm with your words. This certainly does belong in the book.

And thank you for your wonderful email, dear friend. It brought a smile to my face.

Very nice. I was wondering where you found the meanings of those arabic words.  If it was a website it would be great if you could point me the way.

Mistletoe Angel-
I have yet to thank you for all the kind words you have said to me and my poetry. Or even repay you with same Courtesy, and with that said thank you!
Your writing is beautiful and such passion roars from its words. The emotion was so raw and genuine thank you for sharing.

Much love** Erica
