Dog In The Sun

In the sun now sleep,
And wag awake when they come home.
Dogs remember, see through young eyes,
Running rabbits through the wheat
And later crossing to the pasture spring,
Wading, drinking, turning home.
Did you catch them? Does it matter?
Dogs know not to question dreams.
The chasing would be pain now,
Rather drowse in sunshine than to run
Through stubble fields, the places too well known,
While rabbits lope ahead and pausing, turn
And run again. Sleep now. Sleep till they come home,
And dream of wheat.

Seems that you can write about things other than the Urban(e).

And having two ancient Damndogs meself, appreciate this as more (or less) than metaphor.

Hi wranx! Yep, until I was 12, I had a wheat field (with no fence) adjacent to my yard. A sign on our road said "Travel At Your Own Risk"....

I've often watched my dog
run in her sleep, woofing gently
in the hunt of the ever-elusive
rabbit or squirrel...

she wakes, wagging her tail,

sometimes

dreams are realized...

How I love this. I am sitting here with my little couch potato of a dog far away in dreamland. She is such a lazy little border terrier that I am sure the only real exercise she gets is in her dreams. Gets my vote.

Ratleader;  You have the ability to take a simple subject and turn it into something quite extraordinary! This is great!  It definitely should be in the book and it has my vote!

Excellent subject matter, Ed. There are few things sadder than a dog growing old. My dog used to jump up on the bed to lick my face....after years, he would come to the bed, look up and then walk away, knowing he wouldn't make it if he tried. I'll swear I could see the sadness on his face...they don't understand - they just know it is.

Shoot, I like all kindsa aenimals..... but in my whole life I've only met two cats who liked me, and just one dog who didn't.

Besides, it's hard to get a cat to keep you company while you chase rabbits....

I like this part, and so amused:

Through stubble fields, ..."

Ratleader,

I love this. It is a subject close to my heart. I love my little guys and I'm going to read this to them. They are smart and have me wrapped around their paws.

P.S. I do hope this gets in because the subject is so charmning.

(Smiles) Like the dog, I guess we all appear much more virile and limber in our dreams... I do hate, though, when I wake up with a leg cramp from a fervent sleep run... Darn dogs (even the old ones) are much too hard to catch even in my dreams when they spy a rabbit. Sorry, I've gone to ramblin' now. Anyway, good poem that inspired some nice thoughts and memories and gets a vote from me.

-Bob

PS. Glad this poem made into the book!!!!
