Quiet Perhaps it was because she was too ill to hold me, those first months, that before the first cry of my awake, he would come, and lift me, holding me quietly… then later, in the middle of my youth, I knew when he knew that it was time for us to do our morning dance, he would quietly fix the coffee, and I his toast, he would boil the eggs, I would bring the dishes to table the silent waltz of father/daughter. Sleepy heads missed the unfolding golden mornings, they missed the kiss of fog on roses, and the brush of hummingbird wings that would visit, he and I in the quiet. Perhaps it is because in his ill I held him last, as the early morning rise of sun brought to the morning fog a glint of the mystic that would stay even though he would not fix coffee again. I rise each morning to the quiet sounds of remembering, smelling deep the liquid warm of yesterday’s hot coffee and hearing yet the golden quiet and hushing sweep of hummingbird wings. ~*~ Dedicated in the memory of Robert Howard Rilling Karilea Rilling Jungel [This message has been edited by Sunshine (03-24-2003 01:35 PM).] |

(big hugggssssssss) You will always make your father and your whole family so proud, sweet friend, they are all truly sunshine to your heart and I know right now will always be deeply touched by the dedications you give them and they will be the hummingbirds that will always flitter in the spring! (sigh) God Bless You, sweet friend, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Karilea, thank you for sharing! May love and light always shine upon you! Winston, my father passed in 1988; my mother in 1992. In my mind, they were the reason analogies like "two peas in a pod" and "bread and butter; salt and pepper" are sometimes used to describe a couple. One alone was no good without the other... Thank you all for reading, for understanding, and Moth? for the push... |

Karilea...I know I've said this before, but I must say it again with the posting of this poem, you have grown by leaps and bounds as a poet since becoming family at Passions. This poem shows your attention for detail and expresses the you we've come to know and love so wonderfully. What a tribute to your father and what a awesome inclusion in any book. I think that I've got a new favorite of yours Now pardon me while I go vote!! |

This truly is marvelous, KJ, and I love the response in your answer to Winston that they were so close to each other. Your caring for them just pours out. Your scenes as a young child are enchanting. You are so worth reading!! KJ Through rubble and trouble and dark of night |

You know if you never had what you have expressed in this poem, it is warming to read, to the point of tears. This is one of my favorites of yours because you shared the love you had for your Father with us, so we can feel what real family is all about, and we do feel it. Fantastic poem Karilea. |

"fog on roses" Gotta tell you, that single image really caused me to remember some mornings many years ago when I saw, touched and smelled the scent of such roses. Thank you for that, Karilea. In the book it goes |

Karilea~ Beautiful memories of your father and you. Thanks for sharing. Morning time is my daughters favorite time also, and even though she is grown and married we somtime still share a morning together. I work nights and every now and then I stop by and have a morning cup of coffee with her...Paul "To share my poems with you is to share my heart with you" [This message has been edited by Paul Wilson (02-28-2003 01:26 AM).] |

"Perhaps it was because she was too ill to hold me, those first months, that before the first cry of my awake, he would come, and lift me, holding me quietly…" Chills. My turn to say that when you wrote of you, you wrote of ME. (except I made the coffee, and he burned the toast. I remember being as young as eight years old shaking my head when he scraped it "new", as he used to say...) smiles, hugs, and yes, a couple of tears with my vote. |

My grandfather died on the day of his birth. Jan.26, 2002. My one memory of him is waking with him in the morning before ANYONE else was up. We would have Folgers coffee and a donut. This started for me at the age of 5. The one good memory I have of him... thanks for the memory... |

Glad I didn't miss this one, Karliea... I'm so sorry I haven't read your work in so long, not only sorry to you but to myself... you have such a unique, engaging style that you've developed and absolutely mastered. Free verse is finest when written like this... in such a way that I can forget everything I remember about form and technique, and just read, and feel my heart being touched in a way I doubt I could ever do for another. I just love it... I'm definitely voting for this. Great work, Kari. (edit) Couldn't find the voting button, this one's already accepted...
