Silent Utterances Though she never held the babe from birth, but only days into weeks into months after, still, a connection of heart held them then, holds them now… the child always knew when the mother pained… She loved to claim her ESP, as mothers do, knowing things that mothers should never know, and she was going to live to be one hundred and fifty, to outlast that gosh-awful red furniture, inherited by the mere fact her own mother did not wish to want it any longer, so when the silent sigh escaped her lips as the upholstered red wearing wore thin, it was a relief the child heard, though hundreds of miles away… for she had grown to womanhood with a giving father who lost it all in illness; she realized the spoil of her gains, and did not bring that to her children… her only claim to beauty was the bright red of lips, slicking brilliant against her pale countenance, but her eyes, her green eyes, were ever brilliant, so much so that between her eyes, and her lips, her face glowed, certainly and most especially, under his gaze… but silent utterances between mother, and child, were never worn thin, nor masked by lips, red, nor spoiled by gifts of time, nor heard, by others… and this comes to her daughter, in days, through touching wisps of fog in May, or childhood’s blue of sky, or the feel of aging skin under fingertips, as she recalls the way her mother’s felt at this age… The day of that call, an announcement of her mis-belief, from one who claimed the sky was green if she said so, that one hundred and fifty candles would never grace a cake, the push-pull of the joke-curt truth, left each silent, uttering unheard thoughts, pushing love through phone cords faster than any speed of sound, as silent tears came from wells of forever love… as the child always knew when the mother pained… "What do you want me to do?" …"Understand," Silent utterances Dedicated in Memory of Jacqueline S. Karilea, A fine tribute indeed... If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again. |

(tears fall down my cheeks) Oh Karilea, this is beautiful, sweet friend, even if 150 candles couldn't fit on a cake, over 150 blessings are always surrounding your heart, as she will always love you and never forget you as the love of family is forever! (big hugggsssssss) This is gorgeous, sweet friend, I send angel hugs of comfort, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Karilea, thank you for sharing! Hi, Kailea; It has been a very long time since I have read one of your poems and to discover the wonder and beauty of this poem of enduring love is a gift that surely belongs in the book! Ellie A friend hears the song in my heart, and sings it to me when my memory fails. |

'but the silent utterances between mother, and child, were never worn thin, nor masked by lips, red, nor spoiled by gifts of time, nor heard, by others…' I know I read this when you first posted it, thought I responded. Hmmm. Oh well, here now. The poetry you write about your parents is like perfectly matched bookends. |

Your poem makes me sad. I wish all of us had that kind of mom. The ache we feel is for what we missed. This is definitely book-worthy. (Should this joke-curt truth be cart? or does it mean curt as in short?) |

pushing love through phone cords..a wonderful line. I am having a hard time remembering which of these poems I have read and responded to. So if I vote twice by accident, ( one without a rsponse) I apologize. M |

WOW!!! The silence on the phone line between daughter and mother screams in this poem as does the realization that here none of us live forever. (OMG) You leave some strong impressions on the heart after reading this poem of love connections, ESP, God awful red humor, love without makeup, transparency, admiration, etc. etc. In my mind, you've captured in great detail this wonderful relationship between mother and daughter and I'm for certain that this poem will be one treasured by many a family and friend and many a family and friend to come. God bless. -Bob |

Ahhh Karilea ~ You have tugged the heartstrings with this beautiful tribute ~ "and this comes to her daughter, in days, through touching wisps of fog in May, or childhood’s blue of sky, or the feel of aging skin under fingertips, as she recalls the way her mother’s felt at this age…" ~ How many, many days I have had these thoughts... drying tears...voting... I came to my computer early this morning, opened my e-mail...and exhaled. I couldn't believe I had mentally been holding my breath, but I had. Thank you, my friends, for making it possible for this salt of the S&P pair of poems to make it into the book. I don't know who all will be coming back to read this, but do know, I thank you, and will be thanking all of you individually in the days to come. |
