The foaming crest before the steel
of blackened hue this man of war.
Where battles fought are gruesome, real
and take these men to places far.

A gentle swell does rock and sway
this mighty ship of doomsday make.
As cresting waves in whispers say
we give to you our souls to take.

The sea that gives and takes their lives
on days of calm or stormy seas.
Where sailors bed without their wives
and humbly bow on bended knees.

These souls that sail, that take to foe
the steel of battleā€™s fiery hail.
Though fear is real, will never show
as warriors climb the bloody rail.

A plank awaits the coward's fate
should one turn tail and cry to leave.
As sailors fight beside their mate
and share their blood on crimson sleeve.

To the portside they turn the sail
till land is seen up on the main.
A wayward wench, a pint of Ale
shall raise the mast without a strain.

I sometimes wonder how you have such a story to tell, how you get the words like this...

This drug me back and forth between the centuries, and the continents.  The salt spray stung, as well.  Magnus, this is perhaps one of your quieter, stronger pieces.  Keep this up, and you will be published.  This gave me chills.

Rightly so, Cap'n.

THE ORIGINAL !!!!

As an Ex Matelot (A sailor in the British Royal Navy), who experienced personally rough seas, and having to climb to the top of the mast in Force 9 gales (sadly to fix a radar aerial, rather than to mend sails!), and also seen the brutal reality of combat, I found this write hit me right in the spot.  Crafted words, that if you havn't also experienced these things too, show a perceptiveness beyond belief.   A write that conjured up visions long forgotten, and possibly (for me!) best forgotten.
Kind thoughts and Seasonal Felicitations from the Music Maker (John)
