She mumbled that she was
Dancing with Fred Astaire
But when I arrived at her place
It was only her Fridgidaire

She moved around it as though
She was Ginger to her Fred
Holding onto the handle
Some tune playing in her head

We knew the time was coming
When old Granny would surely crack
She’s lost it for sure this time
Now there’s no going back

I called the local old folk’s home
To see if they have some space
For granny and her all stuff
To move into their place

They said they needed to evaluate
If Gran is in her right mind
I told them to come right away
To see what they would find.

They arrived, pinched of face,
Ready to proclaim Granny whacked
Dressed all in gray they appeared
Prepared to be attacked.

I pointed them in the direction
Of the kitchen where Granny danced
Holding the handle of her white fridge
Hearing music she was entranced

They watched her for a moment
Until she seemed to notice them too
Then she stopped her dancing
Long enough to say ‘how de do!’

“What are you doing” they asked her
as she held onto her Frigidaire
‘I’m living out a fantasy
I’m dancing with Fred Astaire!’

At that they two just smiled
my concern seemed out of place
and then it was that I saw
the smile on Granny’s face

Who’s to say what should make us happy?
Can’t we be Ginger to Fred Astaire?
And what’s so wrong with following a beat
To dance with the Frigidaire?

Dear Lady deVine...Extreamly enjoyable... made me think of my own grandma... a little ol' lady of 93 who is still able to chase great-grand children around the yard.  I really like the sentiment of this piece.  Thanks for sharing

I love this, and it is so true.
On occasion I do something odd (dancing around, rare) and my grandchildren just shake their head.

Such fun...

Warm regards, Pat

Sheesh I dance with door frames all the time, and they stay put when night falls Sharon, that was cute but guess what I danced with my fridge door for a long time until I got a layout in the kitchen where I couldn't go wild.  I am sending this to my Aunt who will understand why immediately.  Oh, and I loved this.

May a handshake, smile, kiss or a hug be the best present you give or receive this year.

Thank you all for reading and replying!

The beginning of the inspiration for this story goes back to when I was a teen. I worked in a diner in my home town. Across the street was a used furniture/appliance store. It was a hot summer day - really beautiful as only Michigan can be...the diner wasn't busy so after I did my chores, I looked out the window and saw the parttime worker across the street. He was dancing with a big white refrigerator. Right there on Main Street!!! He was having such a good time, it made me smile. That moment stuck with me. I've made my own nonsense moments over the years - even danced with my own fridge! For me, it's freedom. Freedom from staid society rules. Yesterday someone told me I was 'weird' for doing something nonsensical. I told them about dancing with my 'frigidaire' and it inspired this poem (what else rhymes with Frigidaire but Fred Astaire?). I'm glad you liked it!!

Now go out there and do something weird!!!

But?
Have you ever tried to "dip" a refridgerator?

That's when it's time....

LOL - Very cute - Now we have to assess this properly - The mere fact that it's a "Frigidaire" is a dating factor in its own right... I recall having a "Westinghouse" when I was a kid...

It's when we start dancing with the old "Ice Box" that we really need to worry...

How good of you to write this
It's really quite a piece
Now I don't feel so foolish
That my broom's named Cyd Charise

Happy New Year!

LOL...nice.  I enjoyed this very much. Reminded me of my grandmother.  One day when I called to check on her she was telling me horrid things that had happen to different people.  I asked, who these people were, did I know them?
I had to laugh, for it was the people on her soaps that she looked at.  If I remember correctely it was The Guiding Light.
Have a wonderful new year!!!
Hugs.

at least you don't have to teach frigidaire how to dance, but I should talk it over with mirror. . . . he knows everything.

Sharon~
This gave me a smile on many levels.
Not only did I enjoy the humor, but this
also reached in and touched my heart.
This speaks loudly, Sharon...and I heard.
