She saw his truck as she pulled in
Sitting there dripping oil like it always did
And the green purple pool that floated
In the puddle behind it caught her eyes
Reminding her of the jack falling
And how the bruise colored
A lot like that.

She pulled in next to him
And raised his hood
Grabbed the coil wire
And jerked.
……………………………….

Red’s was mostly empty
But Travis was sitting on the corner
A beer in front of him
Staring at the table.

Iambe slid into the seat opposite his
And waived at the barkeep
“Bring me a shot of Ezra.”

His eyes looked  like dust.
Old and powdered from too many storms
But still had a sparkle when he smiled
She just didn’t remember him smiling much.

Barkeep brought her drink and sat it down.

“Another” she ordered as she picked it up
“In fact, bring the bottle and another glass Red.”

Travis gave her a rare grin and asked,
“You know I plan on driving on tonight?”

“Yeah, I figured.” She answered
“But seeing as how it has been a while,
you can drink a couple with me.”

Red brought the bottle and glass
Nodded to her and asked,
“You want it on your tab Iambe?”

“Sure do Red, thanks.” She replied

After a couple of shots and some small talk
About Wyoming winters and New Mexico summer heat
Travis  screwed up his courage and looked her in the eyes.
“What you really want Iambe?”

“You.” She replied.

“Not likely you want me.” He said with lowered head.
“You’d just have me there a while then want me gone again.”

“Maybe,” she started, “ but you know you were right.”
“We are damned in our wanting.”
“The part about tangled up was wrong though.”
“What makes us ugly is the scars.”

He looked at her with wary surprise.
“ Look, Iambe, I’ve got to go.”
He stuttered and rose to his feet.

“Sure,” she said,
and poured another sip of Ezra.

She gave him 5 minutes
Counting the seconds off the “Old Milwaukee” clock
That hung on the wall above the door
Then picked up the bottle and headed outside.

He was still there
Cranking the engine and pounding on the steering wheel.

“You know you are going to have to ride with me.”
She yelled at him.
“Your coil wire is bad.”

He looked at her with a half smile
“How you know that?” he asked.

“I cut it.” She said as she walked
over to the drivers door of the old Scout.
“Get in.” she said, “I’m giving you a ride.”

The old Scout headed back out onto 132
And Iambe switched the radio on.
........................................

You can leave me anytime you want to, I’ll not keep you here
You needn’t live in worry and you sure can’t love in fear
Wrap me in your arms now and take me in your heart
You can leave me in the sunlight if it true that we must part

Tonight I want you darling to chase away these tears

.......................................

Travis felt her hand take his
And then heard Iambe ask him,

“marry me?”

He looked at her and knew
his eyes must look ike a deer in headlights.

"What?" he asked.

"You always were a damned fool." She laughed.

    ha... Tsk! perfect ending....quite real....!!!
I also enjoyed the story line, and the true ending I am sure will be a shocker....Mmmmmmm????

Though, of course hope it never ends.

Pat... never really know do you...whether it is the ending here or the beginning of yet another run.... marrying Iambe would be a pretty scary proposition..

Andrew: bud you haven't missed anything if you haven't read the others I have done on Iambe.. thanks for dropping in..and the nice words.

Sunshine ( evil grin) I doubt either one of them is sure of anything when it comes to getting along... and no one said he was saying yes, now did they.... but then again maybe he will...and she'll wake up with cold feet... figure it can hang awhile...and I'll debate what to do with them...in a couple of months or so...

So interesting. I added to my original reply, before you replied. True, I have still not gone back to read the beginning of her, however in these few I've read recently I thought it was he whom she was waiting for to 'soul heal', not her. She is simply a handful, huh? Ha! She just now had a moment of weakness....with the marry me, that's all, right?  smiling and loving these...Of course, you know I hardly come up with poet's intention and read into poems my interpretation.
will be fun to follow....thanks.

Nancy, Duncan, Pat...
Truth is I didn't have the hear tot finish it the way I knew it would end... not on valentines day... but if you had to read the real ending to this it it would best be read on another day...

I'll let them have tonight and the weekend
along with everyone else that wants to believe in real romance and love to make it out to be something sweet... maybe next week I'll write the second half of this one...

Capt., it's good that you didn't make them break up on Valentine's Day....now isn't it? You may have to hide in the cornfield with Duncan, if you make all us hopeless romantics disappointed...LOL

Don't wait a couple of months, like you said earlier, though, okay????

it is 2 a.m. and i'm sitting here with some "scary smooth", water, Lionel Richie love songs, tears in my eyes, and this darn pc.  I've quite given' up on that guy i was talkin' about....after tonight.  Put on top of that my father's problems...and I'm a mess.....

so, make that ending a really good "BAD" one....if you're gonna do it, might as well do it right....

*sigh*

Sometimes love can be so cruel,
sometimes we learn by bein' a fool,
I don't know why girl why we've lasted so long,
it may be the one that keeps us strong.

You know that I'm so glad to say,
that it all turned out this way,
cause you know that it almost slipped away, oh baby, when we manage to stay alive,
we've found that only the strong survive,
so I just had to tell you baby....
sometimes love can be so cruel

Lionel Richie
