Paper Valentine

You handed me a paper heart
The edges lined with lace
And "I Love You" was flushed in red
Across your timid face

Today I hold this simple heart
A handmade valentine
With letters written carefully
"I hope you will be mine"

Who'd ever guess that love was born
Within a childhood tear
Or fingers would some day retrace
The letters bold and clear

I kept the valentine for years.
And when I was your bride
I pulled it out and showed the world
With all my joy and pride

For many years we've laughed at how
Our friendship had begun
And still this paper valentine's
The greatest gift I've won

Then life took turns and you one day
Abruptly would depart
But I have kept within my hold
The precious paper heart

You gave your heart completely
To the one love of your life
For it was I, the Valentine
The lover and the wife

But she who took you from me
Had a power beyond my means
So swiftly you were taken from
My most desirous dreams

She cannot ever have your heart
It still remains with me
The cruel disease, she took your life
And set your spirit free

You handed me a paper heart
With lace around the edge
And on this day of Valentines
I still recall my pledge

I said "I'll always love you"
Very early in my youth
Who would have guessed these simple words
Would some day be the truth

I have no paper valentine
and know I won't replace
the love you had for Tony
I see always on your face.

But will you hold my hand
on Valentine's Day my friend?
I want to tell you from my heart
I'm your friend until the end.

Mysteria,
Pass that box of tissues over here. What a true friend you have been. Thank you, dear, for this loving poem. I treasure it.

NOah,
WOW, looks like Christmas! You are dazzling the forum today with your beautiful graphics. Thank you, dear friend for your wonderful response.

Nancy, Awww, it's nice to know I've touched your heart. Thank you so very much for your dear words

Ruth,
THank you, sweetie
Gosh, I sure hope it doesn't snow next week! If it does, we'll just do it again. But I'm thinking positive and so i'll see you soon. My e-mail is out until I call Nan and see if she can help me out of this mess I've made with my settings. Then I'll write you again

Hugs
Liz

All that i can say
is that one day
i hope someone will have
that much love for me.
That is the greatest gift
one could ever recieve.

Liz, this touched my heart so deeply that I don't know if I can hold back the tears. It is so loving and sweet, and it was so courageous of you to share this with all of us. I hope that one day I will be able to write about the sad times in my past life. Some say that is a good way for healing of the scars to take place.
.
.
.
The reason I write, most of the time, about my Love is because the other hurts so much it depresses me too bad to write about it. He is the only really happy part of my life, now, so I try really hard to think of him all the time. I know that one day, I will have to quit pushing those other things that make me so unhappy back in my mind.....
.
.

Well, friend, I really didn't mean to say all that on the thread of your poem, but it just came tumbling out, I guess.....

My dear Liz, As if I don't have enough tears of my own, I now add yours with mine. This is truly and honestly a delightful and heartfelt poem. You are such a gifted writer with a heart as big as the state of PA.

Luvs and hugs, Marti
