Listening to every heart

Konrad – Dana

Sweet sickness is what comes
of migraines – sickening sweet,
honey hung back in your throat
thick,
residual effects of liquid gold
doing nothing to
alleviate
the nausea that took hold
as each muscle grew cold in
tense wait
of another sharp flaming stick
behind the eyes.

Barely breathing, Konrad
did not tempt fate by even thinking
of taking a deep breath,
let alone thinking much.

His only way out of this
was to focus, as he had been told,
by medico after medico,
even when in Mexico,
and he didn’t even
attempt to remove
his boots,
just lay sprawled on the rent-by-night
bed, vaguely smelling of some
lost lust,

and he didn’t try to decipher
whose.

Instead, he brought
his hand up to his eyes,
shielding them from
the afternoon sun that
edged in behind the flyspecked shade

and thought of Dana.

Dana had been, was, his rock,
a soft rock, his oasis of thought when
all tore at him, and this damned
certificate was tearing at him, all that he had learned,
was grinding his gut as much as the liquid gold,
and the migraine’s nausea,
so he slowly rolled now,
over to the soft thoughts of his rock,

when he last saw her,
tanned and tall, jeaned and sweat-shirted,
glowing with fresh enthusiasm,
almost as tall as he,
not as tall as Jake,
not as tough as Iambe,
perhaps as soft as Dillon…he didn’t know,
it had been some time since he had
seen his Dillon…

and brown eyes.  Auburn hair
and those chocolate eyes, warm and home,
where he would lose himself,
and he pulled
on the liquid of her voice like a rope hung over
a chasm,
bringing himself up to the snug of her memory,
and slowly, slowly,
the migraine eased.

But the certificate
still remained, folded,
waiting, haunting
his siblings tomorrows.

(chuckling) well now... you weave even more into this headached nightmare...that in parts read sureal...in parts reads heart..

well... figure the waiting wont kill me..but my head is starting to hurt...

you are indeed setting the stage for a lasting character to emerge... well done.

I liked this very much, Sunshine... I just hope that powerful description of a migraine is from imagination, not experience. *S*

Excellent story-weaving! *S*
