sleeping late
was never an option
on Addison Street,
Mary believed that whole
"early bird" thing
therefore we, her children,
grew up
gathering worms at sunrise

I'm all grown up now
and admit questioning the value
of a handful of worms at sunrise;
I question quietly, though,
because questioning anything
Mary believes to be true
is always tricky and requires
a certain diplomatic expertise

I must admit (never to Mary),
the possibility
of a few less worms
is not all that disturbing;
I am, however, programmed
(Pavlov would be proud)
to waking with the sun,
and doubt
that will ever change--

but,
there is one thing
you have taught me
that I fear Mary never learned;

after sunrise,
after the gathering,
there is something
quite extraordinary
about sliding between the sheets
and waking all over again
with you

"And it was at that age...Poetry arrived in search of me...And something started in my soul."
Pablo Neruda

I enjoyed this. Grinning here. You did a great job with this, from start to finish.  I especially liked the ending.

Saw the title, saw the author, knew I had to come in...and I was not in the least disappointed, in fact, quite elated with this poem of supreme excellence! A wonderful read and the ending...absolutely marverlous!

Whether on the shoal or on the shore,
I'll seek the lighthouse evermore.
