I wrote this a couple of years back after watching all the hum about groundhog's day on TV. I live about a 1/2 hour drive from Punxy and have had the fortune (?) of seeing ole Punxy Phil live and in person, although not on groundhog's day in the middle of winter, but in the summer time in the library where he resides the rest of the year. Such fuss about a furry beast telling us something we already know, that springs a long time off.

What’s Cooking On Gobblers Knob

At Seven Twenty-Eight this morn
They issued out a call
Where Two Thousand people gathered
Eyes upon him all

In a place called Punxsutawney
Way upon a snowy hill
People gathered round the home
Of a groundhog they named “Phil”

There on the hill called Gobblers Knob
Located in the east
They pulled him out from his warm nest
That little furry beast

Gloved hands held his body high
The waiting crowd all roared
Cameras flashed, there was applause
And poor ole “Phil” looked bored

He looked out at the noisy crowd
Gathered all around
And then glanced down to see his shadow
There upon the ground

I don’t know ‘bout you my friends
But I know that I, for sure
Don’t need be told winter’s still here
By a weatherman with fur

So I’ve got a good suggestion
I don’t think “Phil” will like a lot
Let’s kidnap winters harbinger
And cook him in a pot

ROTF...Ruth!  Ye of little faith!  Shoot, it was 70 degrees here in the middle of the USA yesterday...it's 46 now at 7:42 a.m. with a promise of being in the 60's towards noon...

of course, being Kansas, you don't dare blink, 'cause we're supposed to have snow come the middle of the week.

Spring?  Nah...'round here, we just have seasons of flux...

Too much expectations and pressure on this poor little critter, I'd say, lol. Loved this Ruth!

Best wishes,

This was great! Thank you for the read.  As I was telling Nan, I live very close by but never been to Gobbler's Knob! I seen Phil and his girlfriend Philamina at their home, which is in Punxsutawney's local library. hehe Your poem was so much fun thank you for sharing it with us.

Drats, he saw his shadow again and ran away! What a big baby! Well, I guess there's no need to put away the hat, gloves and snow boots quite yet!

(giggles in delight) Ahhhhh, but that would be a little too mean, how about we just wrap him up in a bunny suit and make Phil be the easter bunny! (kiss on cheek) This is gorgeous, sweet friend, he'll have to work to pay for springs wait, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Ruth, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,

No way! Let that poor critter have his shadow and hide it too!
Shaking my head, though I know you mean him no harm. (?)
Happy February, whatever the weather.
