30 Second Wait

I sit with him,
Me almost old enough
to be his mother,
yet not anyone's.

I challenge him to his thoughts,
leaving behind his denials
wanting him to think of a future,
even though...

I time his dressing, rush him
through his necessities,
driving him through morning traffic,
for a 30 second bombardment.

He puffs quickly,
not able or wanting
to give it up, as we
walk through soft crystals
newly laid before us.

I wait, watching all who enter
everyone familiar with each other's ordeal,
smiling a knowing smile,
waiting their turn.

The news speaks loudly of war
and no one seems to care, all are silent
fighting their own.

I sit quietly wondering how it feels,
how I'd live my life
if I was one of them...
but here he comes, so young,
in good health otherwise.

I put on my best smile,
ask him if he's ready to go home,
watch him light one quickly,
take two puffs while walking to the car,
put it out and join me,
once again, for the quiet ride home.

M

KM...I have been taking a friend for  radiation treatments every morning.  He had a brain tumor removed, is only 35 and is otherwise a specimen of health...

Thank you for reading
and leaving your words.

I can sense the intenisty in the whole situation.
I like this alot, though its quite sad.
this is my favorite section.

He puffs quickly,
not able or wanting
to give it up, as we
walk through soft crystals
newly laid before us.

Always, Alyssa

I can imagine you sitting there thinking all this, as I can imagine your sweet smile.

He is lucky guy to have you for his friend!

He's been so good to us, the least I can do is be there for him when he needs someone...

While there I noticed, on the table in the waiting room, poetry(in sleeves in a photo album) by a cancer survivor. Good Uplifting reading and beautiful poetry.

Thank you for the responses, as you know I write as a daily diary and this was just one part of my day.
