Know ye there is life beneath frozen earth protecting seed oh potentiality the virgin bride awaits the groom. Slash the grasses that have died prepare her with annoint of fire. This winter field has long been dead. Prepare ye now the nuptial bed-- sanctify and bless the womb. I rid my self's futility-- Brigid--she does dwell in me! I invoke the light of bliss and dance in praise of Candlemas-- alive in strobe of flickering. Tears and sweat with ash of death are talcum for the winter's bane. Torch the tomb of my regret prepare the garden to beget till the ground of sad refrain-- I stand in praise of quickening. * * * (otherwise known as groundhog's day, this celebration has its roots in slash-and-burn agriculture, whereupon the dead remains of last years crops were burned, preparing the ground for tilling for the coming Spring. It also has the sympathetic magick qualities of "coaxing" the Sun back into blessed renewal, via an attempt to taunt the God Sun into returning to claim his bride (Earth) against the presumed advances of an inferior suitor--the bonfire. This was, however, a very practical method of preparing farmland in early agriculture as it both disposed of old growth easily and fertilized the soil through ash and compost.) grin...the pagan lesson is over--this witch will leave ya with a simple, "Blessed Be." |

Fire of course is used in several pagan holidays... and many think the religions were born in part out of the need to pass knowledge of agriculture, seasonal changes, practical practices on to people who did not read or write. Embracing a celebration however was something all knew how to do and therefore staging a celebration at the times when collective knowledge indicated it was time to perform some practical function combined the passing on of such knowledge and practice and unified the local "communities" that might at other times be at odds with each other. Enjoyed the journey.... and send blessings to your home.. |

(sigh) Really makes you think, does it? Makes me think if this pagan ritual is related to the slashing and burning of the rainforests, etc. (big hugggsssssss) This is wonderful, sweet friend, blessed be you and be ever blessed, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Karen, thak you for sharing! May love and light always shine upon you! Love, Noah Eaton "Underneath your clothes there's an endless story..." |

Find me some new words to describe my love for yours, my words seem weak and unfitting in description of yours which are always beautiful and moving [This message has been edited by Aenimal (02-01-2003 06:04 PM).] |
