Listening to every heart

Scrutiny

Sometimes, we have to review
what we couldn’t see
because expectation
was still so prevalent…

but there she sits,
surely, it seems that
her thoughts would be
too-small,
engulfed by the rock she is on,
let alone
all that overshadows her…

could a dream ever be
that big?

Her knees pulled up to her chest
arms clasped ’round,
she would
walk the edge of fear,
jeering at it,
she would not,
could not see the simile
of climbing toward her visions,

she could only see
a scalable rock,
and unimpeded by the
imbalances still to come, she would say,
“watch me,”
with no training, no guidance,
just the need to seek the edge…

she had dreams,
but could not see the
winding road it takes
to reach the top.

Then, or now.  Somewhere,
she is out there,
over an edge.

I see her in my mind, as that bare tree
with exposed limbs,
still in reach,
though naked to the world,
a ghost of what could have been.

I see her now,
as I scrutinize faded smiles
and our mutual losses;

surely, reproach is a cold blanket.

Lucky for her, she still has the heart and soul of you with her, and perhaps will turn around and recognize this unconditional love.
What a perfect photo to accompany a wonderful poem. Thanks for sharing.

"Reproach is a cold blanket." And God is a warm Comforter and He is a great pair of Hiking Boots. I don't climb without Them/Him....and I've scabs on the elbows, knees and bruises on my ego to know this truth of mine...

Enjoyed this thought provoking write, Karilea...

I don't 'gush' often...
but this is some of the best poetry I've read in a long time.  And the title was pleasantly understated.
Really, really like this!

Wow, Karilea!

I once heard motherhood described as having your heart walking around outside your body.  This poem expresses that so clearly.  Thanks for sharing!!

Dear Sunshine, I enjoyed your wonderful write and the picture inserted, how big that world is around us all, how small we are as one, but together we can smooth the edges and catch her if she falls.

Sincerely
Rick
