The Gila monster
whipped its tail,
nudging desert heat over
into the chill stark
of a star-lit desert night

Katy's exhale was visible
around the headlight beam

her green eyes
shifted me
into second gear

caught me thinking back
to the morning
and breakfast

and how I would never gain weight
on her servings.

The headlight beams
cast gold glints in her
wayward strands,

and she pushed back the strays.

I thought, one day she'll crop
her hair, so that the ringlets
will just ring

and frame her bedroom eyes.

Katy turned,
the Gila moved,
and dawn came too soon.
