when the light shifts I attach my mouth to the breach in her neck a bolt of comfort shoots her spine into ecstasy I remove my lips and words roll across in the tone of a tender memoir she shifts into the lather as the spiders in my fingertips dance along the ridge of her denim encampment close enough to feel the hearts labor increase far enough away to deny any responsibility the inner circles chambermaids might try to stamp in my passport years of apologetic instinct rallies have failed to convince me that these animals tremble less with sorrow than with delight when they crush your humbled offerings in the backseat of a tragedy I will pursue the flesh and any darkened corner in the upscale part of their psyches permanently disfigure their ability to function in daylight as a shovel uncovers the hope chest buried in a poppy field I will smoke thunderclouds tear the delicate strap across her shoulder blades with my incisors cusp the tender rhythm between these rugged claws and tend to the responsibilities of a justice that we must carve out for ourselves |
