When I was very young
I tried to draw
outside the chalk lines,
but you
always stood firm
and made me stay
between the lines,
always trying to prove
its an undeniable truth,
a given,
that mother knows best.
Hiding in the olive trees,
I took my quill and
scribbled outside all
those prescribed lines,
and found out that I
existed outside
the box.
Now I am a mom,
and I am
attempting to teach
the laws of Geometry.
My daughter understands
the circle of life,
but knows she is free
to go in
many directions.

This was inspired by my frustrating attempt to teach Geometry, and triggered by the works of two passionate poets: our favorite squirrel, and christian. Mikey and Chris, thanks!

thanks, squirrel (and I think christian's link is included within Mikey's)

Good thing or no doubt you would've made quite a mess smashing out!!!

I've just read a poem by another poet about the nature of a "genius." This poems about something similar but written in a different vein. It's great if your daughter can surpass the man-made horizons, constraints, or conventions.
Thanks.

It's amazing I won. I was running against peace, prosperity, & incumbency.

Very very bright-touched poetry, MS!
I think our most-remembered lessons are those not taught in linear logical fashion; but, rather they intuited from seeing the 'whole':
the lines outside of the box and the ambiance of how they relate internally and externally.

Kacy,

A very wise and gifted mom you are.
I too, was impressed with the poetry you referenced. Lots to think about.

Enjoyed your unique take on this.

Midnite---The joy of moving outside the line is a growing thing.  Unfortunately, too often children are given negative feedback for doing it.  I commend you and really enjoyed your poem.

Kacy, the part that really stood out to me in your poem were these words....
.
.
"My daughter understands
the circle of life
but knows she is free
to go in
many directions."

.
.
.I really admire you for giving her that freedom to explore the "many directions" of life. I don't know how old she is, but if you will continue to teach her this, there's no limit to what she may accomplish in life.

I was always held back by my Dad, especially.  Even though he made me know that I had the abilities to accomplish anything I wanted to, he always had such tight reins on me that I couldn't really go out into the world and do this....even after I left home. He has always had some kind of hold on me, because of the strict discipline he always had.

Well, I didn't mean to get so long-winded, but this really rouched something in me....

Pat, Martie, Ethel, Nancy, Jeff, Diamond...thanks to each of you, for your encouraging and thoughtful replies.
For those who may not know, my daughter is 15, and has been homeschooled for four years now, and remains in the top 1-10% in mandatory national testing in almost every category. Yep, I am proud of her, and will continue to encourage her to spread her natural wings.
Hehe, OK, I'll put my brag book away now.

good mom, youre a blend,
unlike me,
i m  a real pushover, let them out of the lines, too much, made the father the heavy, and to do the rule thing with them instead.........
but they love mommie, so thats what its all about

(sigh) Oh Kacy, this is wonderful, your daughter is so lucky to have such a loving mom...you! (kiss on cheek) I am not very fond of geometry myself though I still am intrigued by the observations its fathers made and I prefer to stay outside the circle and into the realm of superfluent thought, God Bless You, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Kacy, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!
