Sheep without a shepherd

Accustomed to sycophantic obedience
without their shepherd, they scatter around the rocks
lost, aimless, wandering about in bewildered dream

He stands above the rock in desperate attempt
to lead the flock away to a safer place
gather them into the shelter of green grass

For survival and a longing to keep their hopes high
until their shepherd finds them at last
bring them home to a land of plenty and rest.

We are as aimless as these sheep
if we learn not to cast our lives
into the hands of the Good Shepherd

Lord, give us this day our daily bread
forgive us our wanderings away from you
deliver us from harm and evil. Amen
