Sailing Free?

there he was
sailing across the street
carefree
one foot on
one foot pulsing the ground

~~both feet on
sailing away
up the rise of the driveway
on his way to school
handles in his hands
following the rules

almost

~~big smile on his face
cheery eyes looking out
twenty feet in front of me
made me want to shout

for joy
about the carefree days~~
then, nostalgic I became
wonderin' how much different
this 21st century kind of fun

a tear escaped my eye
a lump in my throat
thinking of the scooters
made from old skates
that were broke

nailing them to a board
oiling up their wheels
headin' down the sidewalk
how wondrous it would feel

children today
have more pavement
for their
store made,
high-tech scooters,
but the traffic and the meanies
have grown,
there’s even shooters

wish that the children
of our world
could have it just as great
playin' and a ridin'
even when it's late

as we
or mom
or grandma
when we didn’t even
have to lock the door

at least there's some
with the happy-go-lucky
essence
of childhood

Virginia, I completely relate to your poem, but, there still are small towns which allow children to play freely, and where people don't lock their cars or homes. I recently moved from SF Bay Area to small No. Calif. town to be closer to children. When the grandchildren informed me I didn't have to lock my car, I was dumbfounded. It is safe here, Nanny, they insist! They do not lock their doors! I still lock everything I possibly can, for having come from what you describe in your poem, I never feel totally safe, even here, where nothing ever happens. (Right!)
That is their attitude and it is good to see them relaxed in their environment. The scariest thing to me is a mountain lion spotted a mile from here. Ugh!

Great poem, you picked a good topic.

Warmly,
Pat

I enjoyed this poem. And, it is sad the majority of children don't get to have the freedom we did.

Virginia - wouldn't it be wonderful if our children and grandchildren could go outside and play without any hesitation or fear? No repetitive warnings from us about strangers, traffic and such? Very interesting write, well done. Chris

When I first moved to this town, it was as most small towns. However, the more it's grown, the more kidnappings and rapes...shootings, so often drug-related I think.   Though, I have accidently gone away with my patio door not only not locked, but wide open, on the screen door closed. Of course it's on the back of the house, but I was gone for four days with nothing stolen or anything.  My neighbor hadn't ventured into the room off the patio and never noticed it was open when she came in to feed the cats, etc.

We are still safer here than in many towns this size...about 12,000 and definitely than urban America. But I have become more concerned about gangs out for something "new" to do, so I rarely walk after dark alone.

Whether on the shoal or on the shore,
I'll seek the lighthouse evermore.

Virginia, this is really a good poem. I enjoyed it. I like the way you described things the way they used to be. Those were the good ole days, weren't they? It's a shame that in most places this day and age, it's not safe for children to play. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us.

VAS beautiful write.  We still don't lock the doors around here much and kids still play fairly safely.  The world is a funny place sometimes though huh?  Well written.

Virginia~
Things certainly are a lot different from the
days of, "Look both ways before you cross the
street, and come home when the streetlight comes on."
Very well said.
