A Boy's Letter To Santa

I sat down this winter
made a contract with the Man
wrote my pencil into splinters
doing the best that I can.

I’ve been thankful, and I’ve been good
Ok, there’s a tarnished halo made of gopher wood
on my head, but it shines brightly above
learned to forgive, and learned how to love.

I know my grandpa and my grandma
can’t always be here like I wish they could
Sometimes I cry myself to sleep
pulling dreams over me like a hood.

But I’m just a little boy, always by your side
seeking in shadows were all happiness hides
Waiting on Christmas Eve for chimney soot
to tumble in puffs from your magic red boot.

And I know there are others more worthy than I
and I know there are others that have little hope
And I know there's many whose love’s been denied
And I know not all souls can be cleansed by soap

So I say my prayers, each evening before I sleep
kiss my forehead, and send me into happy dreams
And in the morning, when the snow is piled deep
white as a dove, and swirling like coffee cream

I wish the world that a young boy cannot see
The world that begs for simple things to receive
that they find, this holiday, love, truth and caring
and that this wondrous season is all about sharing

So, Santa, if you see Jesus, will you kiss him?
Tell him we love him as much as we miss him?
And tell him thank you for all the lucky boys
who are cuddled on Christmas while they open their toys?

But mostly ask him not to forget those forgotten boys
and fill them to the brim with your everlasting joy
and tell them there’s a little guy who just wants to say
we are thinking and praying for them
on this Holy Christmas day.

signed,
a little boy
