Christmas was different
on the poor side of town
If dad was layed off
Santa skipped your house

I remember a sparesly limbed tree
lovingly decked with home made ornaments
An old set of bubble lights and pop corn
reigned over a small pile of gifts

No bright new bicycle or train set
No cute baby dolls for my sisters
Presents were warm things to wear
a new sweater or pair of mittens

Our church was poor in earthly things
We still had the traditional play
with shepards in flannel bath robes
and angels with tissue paper wings

Every one was certain to get at lest one gift
The preacher passed out a small paper bags
Filled with hard candy,a satsuma,
a small apple and pecans

I have known many kinds of Christmasses
Some with fancy store bought trees
But I still remember the poor days
And the joy of the little brown paper bag

Paladin, our little church still hands out a little brown
paper bag to everyone on the night of the Christmas program.
And, the shepherds still wear the flannel costumes, though
some are home-made. Come to think of it, I think the angels
wings are made of some sort of paper. Anyway, I do know
that they aren't costumes bought from the store.
I loved the sentiments you put in this wonderful
Christmas poem. Thank you for sharing your heart.

Robert, you have captured a time in my life that will always hold the best memories of Christmas.

There were no fancy trees, gifts or costumes when our Lord and Savior was born. He brought a simple message of peace and love.

Thank you dear man ... Marti

(big hugggsssssss) Oh Robert, though I never grew up in those times, I truly believe to be thankful for what you have is the most beautiful blessing of all and I would be happy just getting brown bags and Christmas cards during the holidays! (smiles) God Bless You, sweet friend, this shines with love and giving, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Robert, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!
