Little Lamb

A little lamb, o’er field of rock
Had wandered from attended flock
His quivering legs led him afar
In brilliance of an evening star

No place to settle for the night
And so he followed in its light
His master now so far apart
He found a star to warm his heart

The shepherd boy looked far and wide
With trembling guilt he felt inside
Though splendid was the nighttime sky
This loss he could not justify

The shepherd boy had shed a tear
In thoughts the lamb was nowhere near
Imagining how he’d survive
And praying he was still alive

He left his flock with shepherd friend
And found the road toward Bethlehem
He stopped and asked a fragile man
Has anybody seen my lamb?

I’ve heard some talk, they say one passed
Along this stretch of starlit path
Lost was his way, but he had found
A trail that leads to safer ground

The boy then picking up his pace
As tears had wet his hands and face
Continued only to behold
A strange man bearing gifts of gold

Haveyou, sir ,seen my little lamb
I’m following him as fast I can
He’s well ahead, as you can see,
I’m on the starlit road, as he

Are you a King?, the shepherd said
The stranger slowly shook his head
I always thought I was a king
But royalty means not a thing

I’m taking gold that glitters bright
Just like the star that lights the night
For gold is an important thing
For this, the Christ Child,, King of Kings

The shepherd boy couldn’t understand
The ramblings of a foreign man
And so beneath the star he ran
To find his precious little lamb

Then at the city gates he met
A woman he will ne’er forget
He asked her, have you seen a lamb?
Oh yes, oh yes, and took his hand

He truly is the Lamb of God
From far away my feet have plod,
Go, go young man, into the night
To where the star has given light

And so he did, just as she said
And followed where the starlight led
And there he saw a gentle face
The Lamb of God, eternal grace

He knew from flight of angel wings
That this must be the King of Kings
He knelt before the little One
And someone said this is Gods son

What kind of present did you bring
That’s worthy of this newborn King
Just then his little lamb appeared
No sound he made, no one he feared

The boy then held the little lamb
He said my gift is in my hand
For I will keep him for my own
And sheer his fleecy wool when grown

Then I will weave a woolen shawl
The most important gift of all
No King could offer any word
That through the silence could be heard

The voice of God came from above
And said this is a gift of love
How sweet the heart of child untaught
Who bears the joy of loving thought

Your fate is beaming from a star
I see the person that you are
Some day this babe you will befriend
And follow Him until the end
