It is the Season Of hugs and kisses With some of the sweetest Things to do Grandma’s Holiday kitchen Baking in smells of heavenly wishes Grandpa’s turning Into little kids again Smiling as if they found The fountain of youth Grandkids so vivacious That they make the sounds Which relive the past Spoiled in grandmother’s ways Generations melting together In the warmth Of the evergreen tree Loaded with candy canes And so many fond memories Ornaments from all the years Each one with all the emotion To bring back special recollections Of the family tradition Of getting together To celebrate the years blessings Eggnog with something extra added Telling stories from loving parents In front of a fireplace mantle Full of pictures and remembrances Story telling so warming That the charm surrounds Everyone in a magical glow As children listen In grandpa’s lap But always seem To end up in mother’s arms Children then put to bed In loving care With blankets so soft The comfort carries a lifetime While grown ups Revive the tales Till the yawning Takes its toll Bringing parents To wrap up Their bundle of joys Child in one hand And grandparents gifts In the other In the tender gift A mother kisses her child And then hers In the love so sweet That it never sours So as the house Gets so lonely again Grandpa hugs grandma In the tears Of being so lucky D.Lester Young 12/12/2002 Tuscaloosa, AL Copyright © D.Lester Young (White Eagle poetry) |
