the ass-end of space

Days like these beg for warmer thoughts
and recollections of distant summers come to mind
and soothe these tired bones
Of the summer of Beth the barefoot goddess
of Tampa Terrace, whose temple I still worship
in memories and dreams
And of her of the beauty, wit, style and grace
she always carried in that offhand bohemian
kind of way
I fondly recall those better days and summer
nights sitting on that weathered porch and drinks
in hand
A pantheon of youth, full of hope and promise
Laughing the laugh of the those untainted by the
the weight of responsibilities
How we spoke of life and love sharing our
deepest dreams and visions deep into the those
sultry nights
Sweet intermissions of music and song as somebody
playfully strummed that old guitar like minstrels
of old
Thoughts drift ever towards Beth, of raven hair, gleaming eyes like pools in moonlight,
and radiant smiles that pierce the heart
Though the words may well exist, I have yet
to discover those that properly convey the reverance her beauty deserves
Just as I'd never found the words that would make her understand the depth of emotion I felt for her
that glorious summer
I was the always the wild one, the funny one,
the crazy one, but all of it hid the fact that I
was always the shiest one
And the words never came in time and off you
went at summer's end, to live your dreams with
someone else
Ah but thoughts of regret will never sour
the sweetness of these thoughts and memories
of the summer of Beth
There's no where else I'd rather be than in
the hallowed images of you that warm me through
and through

On days like these

Excuse the format, I guess i didn't have enough space and it was displayed this way, can't seem to fix it now. Don't mind the poem either it's a little long winded but just needed to vent surfacing memories on a cold day.

Raphael, this is a beautiful poem. Isn't it great to have
such fond memories of our past? You wrote about it so well.
Thank you, friend, for sharing your heart with us.

This "put me there".  Sometimes I wonder, what if "regret" could be replaced with "revisit"...?  What would change...

reminded me of a counting crows song, hard candy...

"On certain Sundays in November,
when the weather bothers me
I empty drawers of other summers
where my shadows used to be
She is standing by the water
As her smile begins to curl
In this or any other summer
She is always something different
Never just an ordinary girl......."

seek out the acoustic version on the net, listen to it and you'll be back there in that summer.....

Thank you for taking us along, sharing your deepest dream. It seems I was sitting on that porch with you.
Your talent at describing this scene is excellant. Enjoyed a great deal.

Warm regards, Pat

raph, your poem is full of tenderness, grace, wisdom...and moved me deeply....I just gave it a home in my library of my personal favorites---a home of fine literary works that express beauty, that touch my heart and works that enrich my life.

I was flooded with my own personal memories as I read your words. I was transported back in time to summer such as this. Like yours, my memories keep me warm on cold winter nights when I am alone...

~ May you now be making warm memories for your tomorrows...
