Dance of the Crossroads

A broken light flickers above
the prostitute
on the street below
Her shadow casts an angry dance
upon the wall behind her
The dance of the crossroads
of paths paved in [edited by moderator]
none have tread upon
by choice

Homeless man in cardboard castles
bent but not broken
His will trudges forward
In tattered boots
through darkened alleyways
to live the lives
we throw away in plastic bags
and metal bins
to make way for new ones

Downtown where the discarded
collect at stoplights
Bucket and squeegee in
his frozen hands
to wash the windows
of heated chariots
But he can't wash away
the stains of a life
that has soiled his soul

She slides against a silver pole
Under neon light in darkened rooms
but never dark enough
to hide the wanton eyes
that scream with lust
as she dances the dance of the crossroads
of paths paved in [edited by moderator]
none have tread upon
by choice
