Holidays sometimes are sad
when aches are in your heart
Wondering how in your child's life,
you can become more a part
You think of how when they were young,
playing with games and toys
All around the living room,
laughs, fun, and joy
Then they are older,
and have their own family
They lead their own lives,
you they rarely see
Sometimes they move far away,
many thousands of miles
You miss them so very much,
but still try to keep the smiles
You're grateful for the little time
that they give to you
Still wishing one day they'll find the time
to include you in what they do
You know you've much to be thankful for,
with many friends and more family
You just long for your child,
more a part of your life to be
There are so many blessings that you have,
with clothes, food , and a good place to sleep
Many others in our world don't have that,
even warm clothes, they can't keep
So even if you may get real sad
on this Thanksgiving Day
Let's be thankful for the blessings we do have,
and our prayers, let's don't forget to say

Yep
that's what Moms do
dig up those silver linings...
no matter WHERE they are hiding!

Ethel, I so appreciate your feelings in this. More often than not, I too was far, far away from my adult children for birthdays and holidays and no friends can quite fill that void. I understand completely how you feel. A hug to you.

You are so right about being grateful for all we have. But I never denied that which I didn't. As you are not. And I think that is so important recongnizing such and writing about it for I'm sure others will be glad to know they are not alone in these mutual feelings.

God Bless and happy Thanksgiving and may you have a long phone call.

Hugs, Pat

..without surrender, be on good terms with all persons..

Very true words, Ethel. There are more suicides during holidays than at any other time. For as much as holidays remind people to be grateful for what they have, they remind others of what they don't have or have lost. The key is focus in on the good things in one's life .... happy Thanksgiving!

(big hugggsssssss) Oh Ethel, though I am young and of course have never been a daddy, I can understand how my mom and dad feel for me so much and always seem sad thinking of the future when I will start my own life, and I always hug them and tell them that I will always be there for them and to think happy thoughts as I will never stop loving them! (sigh) God Bless You, sweet friend, I send angel hugs of comfort out to you, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Ethel, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
Noah Eaton

Karilea,
Thank you so much for reading and replying to my poem.
There are always "silver linings", aren't there?

Pat,
Thank you for your reply. I really appreciate your understanding.
Sometimes I feel guilty about wanting more, (of my child's attention), when I already have so much.

Michael,
Thank you so much for reading and replying to my poem.
You are completely right in your reply. Thank you.

Noah,
You are such a sweet friend. Please don't ever get so wrapped up
in your own life that you don't include your Mom and Dad.
You will always  be their "little boy", just as Tonia
will always be my "little girl".

Ethel~ Your words ring so true. We may not be able to be with all our loved ones in person but they will always be with us in spirit and heart. I am thankful for that and all the blessings given to me each day...Paul

Ethel

So very true, as the others have said, sadness rises, but so does thankfulness.  Thanks for this lovely poem!
